Discussion Highlights:
- Symbolism and Metaphors used by the author in his poems to create such moving and harsh examples of the reality of war.
- It has really became glaringly obvious that the success and reactions to the text come from the author use of imagery. A text like this requires it, it’s not a rhetorical choice it’s a necessity. Without it the book would fall short in meaning because the whole theme and purpose is to get traditional, fairly comfortable living people, to see the true light of war. On Super Bowl Sunday you see the commercials that make joining the military seem like such a noble awesome thing, and at times yes it is, but when it comes to war it’s the worst experience a man or woman can be in. People will also think if you make it out alive it’s a celebration, but no, these soldiers are forever changed. If you look at statistics it’s saddening how many veterans come home, deal with PSTD, and have poor mental health. Many of them deal with the ability to reintegrate into society. They are so much more different than the rest. Veterans are one of the leaders in suicide rates. The mental effects are often even worse than the physical effects, which tend to be more understood.

-We shifted to In Mad Love and War 
-Very uncommon in that it is coming from a Native American. In our country there is a discrepancy between what natives would call American history and what children in schools learn. We don’t often hear and see Native American perspectives because of their small population today.
-Joy relates her personal life and experiences as a Native American woman to big, worldwide issues. She does this in a unique way. Her ability to shift from storytelling to complex poetry talking about the difficulties and struggles for all native Americans is compelling.

- The theme of power of language:
In her storytelling not only does she talk about personal experiences, she tells the stories of her culture, the traditions, and mythologies. The stories include almost perfect language and rhetoric allowing us to see the scenes in our head and develop a real image of the Native American people and how they thought.
-The beauty in Native American culture:
