Our goal was to get pictures that look natural while also planning poses and places in advance. I am more of a fan of candid pictures than planned photoshoots, I feel like they are more personal. So I wanted to really try and make my portraits look both personal and professional. Another thing that was important to me was making my subject comfortable, things like weird poses or direct light in their eyes can give you pictures that aren't ideal. Going off of the problem with direct light, it was emphasized that taking pictures in large shadows where the sun is behind your subject will produce more visually appealing portraits. Lighting was the most difficult thing about this assignment because there are certain times of the day when it's best to take pictures. The weather also heavily affects the mood of your portraits so that is something that I also had to take into mind. Overall I am very happy with the results of this project.

Landscape research

What is a landscape? The definition of what a landscape is has changed slowly over time, Nasim Mansurov writes, "most landscape photographers strive to show the pureness of nature without any human influence, given how much of the world has been changed by humans, depicting the nature together with man-made objects can also be considered a form of landscape photography." Mansurov explains how the understanding of what a landscape is in photography has changed as a result of what is around us. The world is becoming more industrialized, so figuring out a way to incorporate man-made elements into landscape photography can make the pictures more familiar and real.

What are the key parts of landscape photography & what are they for? Technical, Composition, & Light. Technical has to do with the settings and equipment of the camera and why they're the best choice for landscape photography. A digital camera is best for quicker pictures. Mansurov explains that, "It is extremely important to use lenses that have high levels of sharpness across the frame, good contrast, minimal ghosting and flare and other lens aberrations that can hurt your images." By this she means that something high quality and not cheap is best. Something special about landscape photography is the amount of detail there is. A wide-angle 16-35mm focal length is the most popular choice for landscape photographers. A lower iso is always ideal like 100-200. Bracketing is like layering at least 3 pictures of the same thing over eachother to get maximum detail and sharpness. This also allows you to bring out both shadows and highlights in pictures. (picture above) Tripods are recommended because you are limiting light coming into the camera, meaning it takes longer to shoot one picture.

Key Parts (Composition)

Composition in photography is what your picture is composed with, what it's made of. There are seven followed guidelines for composing photographs. For example, the Rule of Thirds is a grid with 9 equal boxes and the point of it is to line up your subject with the grid lines. Framing is where you have something like trees framing the subject of your photo. Whereas tight-framing has the same concept but it is zoomed in to eliminate other distractions. Foreground interest is where your interest or subject is in the foreground (lower third of your picture). This adds depth and a draw to the eye. Curved lines are more pleasing to the eye and give the viewer's eye a direction to follow. Diagonal lines are similar but it opposes the idea of calmness in curved lines and gives excitement to an image. These all fall under the category of leading lines, which are lines in photography that lead your eyes around the image. repetition and patterns give comfort to pictures. Having balance in photography is arguably one of the most important concepts, things like having symmetry in your image are satisfying to the eye.

Key Parts (Lighting)

The best kind of light for landscape shooting is sunrise or sunset. Sunrise gives you more room for error, as it will only get brighter vs. the sun setting during shooting. Bracketing brings things like highlights and shadows into your picture and redefines them. To bracket, take multiple images preferably using a tripod and then layer them on top of each other.

I utilized AEB mode on the camera to bracket this picture. AEB mode automatically takes 3 pictures of different exposures. I chose this area to take my bracketing pictures because there is a lot of symmetry and repetition.

Landscape (FINAL)

We had to utilize the three key components of landscape photography, technical, light, and composition. Technically, we had to have the corrects camera settings and equipment. I utilized a tripod during this assignment, my camera setting were changing over the three different pictures I took for each HDR image. Overall, I had an f/stop of f/11-f/16 and a low ISO. HDR merging is when you take 3 shots of the same landscape or subject and change the exposure to bring out hidden details like highlights or shadows. I utilized light as I wanted a lower ISO, so I had to have enough light in my photographs for the minute details. I was able to used different compositional strategies like, Rule of Thirds, Framing, Foreground Interest, Leading Lines, Patterns & Repetition, Unique Perspective, and Balance.

In general, I enjoy editing HDR shots because you can really see the highlights, shadows, and colours pop out. On the other hand, taking them can be frustrating. I definitely think I could use this photo taking method in the future as it gives beautiful results. What is difficult about this method is you have to have a tripod and keep your camera completely still.

Overall, this project was probably one of the hardest ones so far. Getting candid shots that look good is more difficult than I thought it would be. It also was troubling because once the moment that I want to capture is over, then I have to make do with the pictures I took. I wasn't expecting to like the pictures, but once I got to the processing step I liked my photos a lot more. The candid shots made it feel like you were there, at Thanksgiving with my family. In summary, this project definitely gave me more knowledge on a different kind of photography, journalism. I got more experiences with having to shoot candid pictures and I enjoyed that.

We were assigned a photojournalism project to capture a story or theme. Photojournalism is a type of photography that is meant to capture events or news through pictures. I chose to photograph my family's Thanksgiving. I decided to capture this moment when my sister told me her boyfriend would be coming to our Thanksgiving. She told me that he didn't have any family in the country and he never gets to see them; which, made me even more thankful to be able to go to family events. I realized that capturing moments like that were more special than I originally thought.
