The Mouth

The mouth is an opening in the head where digestion begins. It breaks down food into smaller pieces. When you put food into your mouth, you begin to salivate. Then you start to chew with your teeth. Your tongue starts moving the food around in your mouth until it is small enough to swallow. Your tongue starts to move the bolus toward the back of your throat and then you swallow.

The Esophagus

After you swallow the food goes in the esophagus.The esophagus is a long tube that pushes food down into your stomach. To do this it uses special muscles that squeeze food down so it does not rely on gravity. It produces slimy mucus to aid it in getting the food down because it acts as a lubricant. The food will take about two-three seconds to travel to the stomach. This is all possible because of the epiglottis which blocks food and drinks from going into the windpipe.
