I put all of the student names in a different color than high frequency/ sight words. This is a flannel bulletin board- I put velcro on the back of all the words so the words can be removed to take to their seats for writing. This is the front of my room where my carpet area is so it's a focal point. I hang pages on my board. We have a read, spell, write routine each week. I write the words on the correct page while the children write it on their paper. I keep the color and number words up all the time. Each week we add 5 new words and put them on the side of the board. These words are in our weekly Nursery Rhyme. The next week we put them under the correct letter and add the new words. I also have a small dry erase board that has the last 2 weeks sight words on it.  They pick 4 words each day to practice writing and saying.  Students first and last names are also on the word wall under the correct letter.  I will probably try to incorporate the read-spell-write routine this year.  I really like the idea of them writing a sentence to go with their words.
They also have a copy of the words their folder. Instead of organizing my High Frequency Words by beginning sound, my team and I grouped them by Phonics skill. We used Orthographic mapping with our students to really analyze each word. We identified those words that followed taught phonics patterns and grouped them together. We also marked words as temporarily irregular if they had a phonics skill we hadn't learned yet and then moved them to the correct area once the skill was taught. The permanently irregular words are ones that are highly irregular or feature phonics patterns not taught in 1st grade.
