The producers, the organisms that produce energy, gets their energy from the sun by photosynthesizing. The herbivores, which are a type of consumers, eat the producers. They only receive 10% of the energy from the producers. The herbivores are then eaten by the carnivores, which are a form of consumers. The carnivores only get 10% of the energy from the herbivores. This process of being eaten from a higher level of consumers is repeated until there is not enough energy to create a new level of consumers. Only 10% of the energy is passed onto each level and each level of consumers is called a trophic level. As the trophic levels get higher, there are fewer organisms because there is only enough energy to fed a certain amount of them.

Cellular respiration is used to do anything. In the model above, the boy eats a pie and breathes in oxygen. The pie (glucose means food) and the oxygen is converted to carbon dioxide, water, and ATP by the mitochondria. ATP is the energy that makes you walk, read, or even sleep. Basically, if you do not have cellular respiration, you will not be able to do anything.

The model above demonstrates energy flowing through living organisms. Energy is passed on by the order of producer, consumer, and decomposer. In order to have energy, the producer has to perform photosynthesis to absorb energy from the sun. Energy moves through living organisms in an ecosystem by having the organisms eat the producers first. The energy keeps flowing, or being passed on, by having organisms eat other organisms until they die. When they die, the energy is passed onto the decomposers because they eat the dead organisms, and the remaining energy is used for the producers to grow (nutrient cycle). Some of the energy in the organisms is no longer usable and turn into heat energy because they have to use their energy in order to live, grow, etc. All of the terms above are used to explain, or demonstrate, in depth, of how energy flows through an ecosystem.
