Legend says that Athena was born from springing from Zeus’ forehead while he had an enormous headache. It was also said that Athena was born from no mother, but there are claims that she was born from Metis, the Goddess of Canny Thought and Wisdom, whom Zeus swallowed in fear of an old prophecy. Athena is often portrayed as a Goddess that also had some associations with “handicraft, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, and skill.” Greek scholars believed that the goddess’ name derived from the city of Athens and had some associations with watching over Athens. Often coming in the form of Mentor, an old friend of Odysseus, Athena warns him of attack and guides him in his journey home; defending them on Mount Olympus before the council of the gods. As Odysseus is a favorite of Athena, she sends him “divine aid” and guidance.“Although she reassures Odysseus during the battle with the suitors, she does not become fully involved, preferring instead to watch Odysseus fight and prevail on his own.” ( Spark Notes) Thus proving her willingness to assist Odysseus but to also let him struggle on his own.   Athena helps those with personalities or attributes similar to her own which is what had influenced her to assist Telemachus and Odysseus, as a provider of wisdom, advice, warning and backing.
