Born Erica Wright, Grammy Award winner Erykah Badu has been an inspiration to me since I was 7 or 8 years old. The queen of neo-soul's languorous, laid-back, and at times slightly tortured vocals instantly felt familiar to my soul from the moment I first heard her. My mother introduced me to her when I was a kid, as she thought our voices were similar. The depth, pain, and beauty of Badu’s voice touched me deeply and continue to inspire me in the rawness of my artistry. Upon reflection, analysis, and comparison between the music I have made and Badu’s music, I can see that besides her deep, provocative, soulful voice, the essence of her interesting textural choices, laid-back jazzy sounds, and hip-hop inspired soundscapes have been embedded within the essence of my sounds.

Badu's influence on culture extends beyond her music. As an activist, spiritualist, culture doula & actress, she has always used her platform to raise awareness about social, political, environmental & racial issues, police brutality, mental health & more. I have also valued using art, expression & creativity as a means to spread awareness & awaken consciousness on all levels so this has been a beautiful influence in my life to witness someone using their platform for good as I was growing up.

References:

Britannica, T.

Miles Davis was a pioneer of sorts. He seemed to think outside the box. He was a legendary jazz musician and composer in the late 1940s and was using electronic instruments by the end of the 1960s. Davis created some of the 20th century's most challenging and influential music and was one of the most original and influential jazz musicians. (Britannica, T. Editors of Encyclopaedia 2011) (Britannica, T. Editors of Encyclopaedia 2023)

Due to his progressive thinking & creative endeavors, I can easily see why Davis was an influence & inspiration for Badu.

Badu released a remix of Miles Davis' 1974 track "Maiysha," produced by Robert Glasper in 2016, showing the appreciation she would have felt for his music in order to spend the time, energy & money doing so. (HANK SHTEAMER, 2016)

In Simon Zagorski-Thomas's article, he analyses the 1970s album "Bitches Brew" by Davis & examines how the musicians, sound engineer, & record producer used cutting-edge (for the time) recording & instrument technology to create the album's unique sound. (Zagorski-Thomas, 2018)

The album was groundbreaking and completely changed the trajectory of jazz & pushed the boundaries of funk & psychedelic rock. (Gioia, 2020)

This not only had a massive impact on Badu's own music but the entire industry as a whole.

References:
HANK SHTEAMER, (2016), Hear Erykah Badu Duet With Miles Davis on New ‘Maiysha’ Remix, Rollingstone, https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/hear-erykah-badu-duet-with-miles-davis-on-new-maiysha-remix-185232/

Britannica, T.

Stevie Wonder has had a huge impact on culture throughout his career.

Stevie Wonder's influence can be felt throughout much of Erykah Badu's hip-hop-flavored music & she herself has thanked him along with George Clinton For Influencing 'Baduizm' In 1998 when she won her Grammy. (D. MARIAH, 2023)

Another example of this is summarised nicely as quoted by Amelia who said, "Two notable instances include her borrowing lyrics from Wonder’s “Pastime Paradise” to include in her song “Drama,” off of 1997’s “Baduizm,” and sampling Wonder’s “Ordinary Pain” during the bridge of her “Penitentiary Philosophy,” from the 2000 album “Mama’s Gun.” (Amelia Mason, 2014, WUBR)

Sandra Marie Kilman's thesis "Stevie Wonder's Musical Politics During the 1970s and 1980s" explores the political messages in Stevie Wonder's music during that time. She discusses how his music was influenced by the social &political climate of the era, including the Civil Rights Movement & the Vietnam War.

Sandra argues that his music was a form of political activism that aimed to promote social justice & equality as well as examining the musical techniques & styles that he used to convey his political messages, such as his use of synthesizers & his incorporation of African rhythms and melodies. (Sandra Marie Kilman, 2017)

This was a lot of information to read so I used tools to help read it out loud & summarise sections at a time to come to an overall conclusion. I feel this Thesis is a great body of work that yet again highlights the role models of Badu's time & how that greatly impacted her own form of musical activism.

References:
D.

Dub Princess creates soulful, groovy, tunes with a fusion of several genres, including reggae, soul, dub, dubstep, hip-hop & D&B with a modern twist, totally owning her own style. From the moment I first heard her voice at Earth Frequency when she played with Grouch, my mind was absolutely blown. Her groovy, soulful voice mixed with all my favourite genres of music stole my heart instantly. She is definitely someone I look up to & take notes from when it comes to her carefree production, dubby tunes & laidback, effortless vocals.

As an artist, I feel it is definitely important to be conscious of the message that is being put out into the world. Dub Princess, like all my other influences, are soulful, authentic, spread a positive, embodied message & groovy tunes.

Dub Princess has collaborated with many artists globally, even one of my teachers, James & happens to be in my mum's friend circle. (Dub Princess, N.D.)

References:
Dub Princess, (N.D.), Spotify,
https://open.spotify.com/artist/7HbkOfqsXZgUAJxaK2I3GJ?si=pYmO_rDIQYq_5I-OOy2n-w

Dub has had a significant & obvious influence on Dub Princess's career. The genre itself is even stated within her artist name. While Dub Princess has sought inspiration from various genres, dub has by far defined her career & been her primary focus within her career.

Dub is an electronic musical style that found its roots in Jamaica from reggae in the late 1960s - early 1970s. Considered a subgenre of reggae, it has now evolved beyond its big brother to become its whole own thing. (Dub Wise, N.D.)

Dub uses a generous amount of reverb, echo/delay, EQ filter sweeps, phase/flangers as well as holding an emphasis on bass, drums & chord stabs which can be heard throughout all of Dub Princess's music. (MasterClass, 2021)

Dub Princess has collaborated with several dub musicians, including Mad Professor and Zion Train throughout her career, furthering her influence.

Dub often features socially conscious lyrics which can be seen within Dub Princess's music. Her lyrics promote social justice, unity, awareness, positivity & community.

Simome Green's & Thomas' articles have not been directly cited in my above writing, yet they helped contribute to my knowledge & understanding of the history of dub, how it evolved through time, transformed & influenced culture & how itself came to be which in turn helps me understand how it influenced Dub Princess & in turn myself.

References:
Thomas, V.

Reggae has very clearly held a strong influence on Dub Princess. Like its little brother dub, which was born from reggae, it finds its roots in Jamaica in the late 60's. Cooper, C. J., 2023)

Key features that can often be found in reggae are heavy bass lines, percussive rhythm guitar on the offbeat, often with close vocal harmonies & positive, uplifting vocals.

Reggae is often associated with Rastafarianism, while dub has a more psychedelic and experimental sound, both of which can be found within Dub Princess's sound & aesthetic.

Another facet of reggae that can be clearly seen within Dub Princess's music is her use of live instruments such as trumpets & other jazzy sounds.

While I did not directly cite Aarons article I found it an interesting read to expand my understanding of reggae, focusing on Rastafari culture, its involvement & interweaving with the genre & introduced a new concept to me - Rastafari utopianism - which I plan to dive deeper into at a later date.

Kauppila's article also was not cited, however, I found this to be a fun read to skim through as the author explored a broad overview of the history of Jamaican music from the 20s onward which gave great insight into how the culture evolved over time & came to be Reaggae.

References:
Aarons, D.

Dub, one of Dub Princess's heavy influences, has been a major influence on the genre drum & bass. As the influences of reggae and dub became more prominent, the sound of d&b began to take on an urban/modern sound which can be seen within some of Dub Princess's collaborations such as with Grouch.

Drum & bass has also been influenced by other genres such as techno, dubtronica/dub techno, jungle, and halftime which can also be seen crossing over with Dub Princess, her music, her collaborations & influences. (Joe Rihn, (2021)

Drum & bass, like its cousin Jungle, are often what is referred to as "talk-prominent" which speaks to the emphasis of including an MC (master of ceremonies, live vocalist whom narrates & hypes the crowd throughout a set.

The Beatles' influence on Tamino's music can be seen in the sounds, rhythms, and orchestral arrangements in his music. He takes on a certain spiritual depth, contemplation, poetry & pushing of the curve which I can also see reflected strongly within the Beatles own artistry.

"Anyway, someone like John Lennon has a big influence on songwriting. His work is embedded into the subconsciousness of any songwriter I think. We are all indebted to The Beatles in a way, just like we are all indebted to Bach. My personal songwriting process is not one of: “Let me take this from what I’ve seen there, and let me take this from what I’ve seen the other guy doing…” (Derek Robertson, 2018)

As Tamino says himself, the Beatles have been a great influence within his own art & the art of many. He speaks to the nature of finding influence from our surroundings within our creative process's as a tool to better our own artistry which I feel is very relevant to this entire project. Our art & creative perception becomes inevitably merged with our external influences, wether conscious or not.

Martinelli's article was not cited, however, it provided an interesting insight into the Beatles' curated image & philosophical views
within their career which provides a curious sounding board to contemplate within the rest of their artistic influence on Tamino & the world.

References:
Derek Robertson, (2018), we are all indebted to the Beatles in a way - Dis meets Tamino, https://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4152165-we-are-all-indebted-to-the-beatles-in-a-way---dis-meets-tamino

Martinelli, D.

Colin Greenwood, Radiohead's bassist, became a fan of Tamino after seeing him on tour several years ago, and has since worked with him on his upcoming second album, 'Sahar'.

Tamino has said that Colin's work was a big part of the DNA of this album in an interview with Elizabeth Aubrey.
