In this story the author used symbolism referring to the little boy's eyes, like when the boy was so focused, or even when he was desperate to achieve his goal, his eyes were a different color or brightness, depending on his tension. The different colors would represent his emotions, or the situation he was in. When the boy died, his eyes were like blue stones meaning nothing, "his luck (of making money) was all over".

Irony

In this story the author used irony by representing the unexpected moment of the wins from the little boy's business in gambling, and the effort the little boy put into finding luck and make money for him and his family while his mother's attitude was being unappreciated towards the boy because she didn't know who had sent the money for her. (Even though she knew her son was in a bad situation by gambling and didn't help him back, therefore, she lost him).
