         <title>Indirect effects of topography on surface boundary layer submesoscale turbulence</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Here we present nascent work that connects bottom topography to surface boundary layer submesoscale turbulence through consideration of topographic modification of mesoscale flow. Topographic effects on mesoscale flow in the present primitive-equation model (with 86 vertical levels) agree well with results from our previous works that use the two-layer quasigeostrophic model. We present two new diagnostic plots: i) vertical buoyancy flux in z-|grad(b)| space, and ii) vertical buoyancy flux in z-\psi_{b} space, where \phi_{b} is the balanced Richardson angle (Thomas et al., 2013). Future work will be focused on decomposing vertical buoyancy flux into contributions from different types of submesoscale instability and frontogenesis using various methods described in the "Next steps" section of the poster.</p>]]></description>
