On their birthdays, I'd have a small card I printed and a lolly pop. I always wrote all the positive things I thought about them, and I have had students over the years who said it meant a lot to them. Sometimes we don't know how little acts of kindness can have such a big impact, and I enjoyed building our relationships like this.
