David Diaz was born in New York and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  He lives in California with his wife and three children. Mr. Diaz has illustrated several other books for Eve Bunting as well.

*Jasmine-Daniel's beloved cat who becomes lost during an apartment fire.

*I feel that it will help children to understand the concept of rioting and looting, something we do not typically discuss with children.
*It teaches children that out of the scary moments in our lives can come hope and friendship when we least expect them.
*Depending on where children are living, they may or may not be aware of multicultural differences. I feel that Daniel is a character that all children can relate to. He is shocked, worried, scared, and loving...qualities that all children can relate to, no matter where they live.
*I would also recommend this book because I think that it teaches children to get along with people that they do not know.
* There is a great deal of vocabulary that can be introduced (rioting, staggering, hazy, shelter).

*During art class, the students could study David Diaz's technique of using paintings mixed with collages of  real-life objects to bring the story to life.
