This article discusses the relationship of reading comprehension and picture books. Early readers use the stimulus of the pictures to make text connections which hopefully enhance their comprehension skills. In grades k-3 picture books can create textual-visual relationships.

The authors of this article have developed a comprehension tool kit in order for teachers to implement it in small group instruction. One tool I found useful was comprehension monitoring and awareness. The article states that

studies have shown many students, fail to understand what they read and are not aware of their failure.
