Throughout the decade there was an stream of movies involving spirits, ghosts, and most things paranormal. They were used to add a new form of suspense and worry about something evil that was there, but you couldn't catch it or kill it. A fear of trying to stop something that you didn't know could be stopped. Rather than having people in green suits and edit it in post, they had people that would make the monster's costumes that the actor would get inside. While this made them look slightly realistic, it could've been extremely inefficient. Movies can be made much faster now because actors can get scenes done without going inside and out of the monster's suit that would take hours. There was much less if any cgi that were placed in horror movies in the 80's. For example in the clip from Poltergeist II the demon that comes out of the husband's mouth is a person in a suit instead of cgi, what it would've been today.
