This cover is strange at first but it makes sense once you dive deeper into the story. Rules are an important part of the story, Catherine makes them for herself and her brother, David, so it's easier for him to navigate through life. "No toys in the fish tank" is one of them. The use of rules was very creative, here and there rules are often repeated to the reader and it built up near then end where Catherine yells those rules at David then yells at him to just keep it in his head since he keeps breaking it, that part showed how Catherine kept hiding her feelings until that point in the story.

Kristi is a side character that is gets somewhat relevant in the story. Catherine always wanted a next door neighbor to be friends with. When she moved she met Kristi she became friends with her but it did make her envious and insecure. She had a clean house and it was much more quiet. This made Catherine struggle a bit more with herself. Also Kristi was the one who encouraged Catherine to go with Jason.

In this story there is a subplot, another smaller plot that supports the main plot. This subplot is about Jason, Catherine's friend. Jason has a disability in where he can't speak and walk. He uses a speech book, a book with cards. Catherine and Jason met in David's occupational therapy place. They catch feeling for each other later. He asks for Catherine to go to a dance but Catherine had a rule against dancing since she hates it. Jason tells her to break the rule and Catherine learns how to be herself regardless of these strict rules.

Cinnamon girl by Lana Del Rey was in my head when I was reading this book. The lyric "There's things I want to say to you but I'll just let you live..." is just a perfect line that describes Catherine. She always hid her anger until near the end where she yells at David and her family, she always kept quiet even though she had this urge to just let her anger out.
