At the beginning of the play, Sheila is shown to be rather foolish, helpless and naïve by calling her brother "squiffy" and stating "mummy - look isn't it beautiful when receiving the receiving the engagement ring from Gerald. Considering the lexical choice of "mummy" this certainly gives her an infantised aspect to her character, but it is the change in her, her metanoia that is most important to Priestley's use of her character.
