Science is universal and a global effort. Everything that underpins our present understanding of the world has come from scientist from different communities. Providing opportunities for them to meet and interact with actual scientist in relevant fields.
Take them on fieldtrips to explore what they are learning in class and how it impacts them. 
Encourage debates and activities that get them looking at the issue locally and globally.

Embedding this into the curriculum:
Discussion: create opportunity for student to discuss and research global situations
Experience: Provide opportunities for them to experience or view the impacts. For example, meeting scientist studying the subject, field trips.
Empowerment: Showing them that this is there world and future. That they have a voice. Have inspiration people into talk to them, give them active project, show them how to make change. 
Solutions: Encourage students to work on their own solutions. Example: banning plastic straws at school.
