This war occurred from 1950 to 1953 and consisted of the U.S. and other nations coming to the aid of South Korea after they were invaded by communist North Korea. The U.S. wanted to stop the spread of communism, so they attempted to push North Korea all the way back, but when they reached the border between North Korea and China, China fought back. Americans were forced back into South Korea, so the war saved South Korea but was unable to dislodge the communist regime from the North. An armistice was signed and the agreement created the Korean Demilitarized Zone to separate North and South Korea and it also allowed the return of prisoners.

This meant that the United States has a communist nation less than 100 miles form its shores, which was very unsettling. So, in 1961, 1,500 cuban exiles armed and trained by the CIA (central intelligence agency) tried to stage an invasion at Cuba's Bay of Pigs. The small forced was destroyed by Castro after President Kennedy refused to involve the U.S. Armed Forces. 1200 of the invaders were captured and the United States was forced to give 53 million dollars worth of food and supplies to Cuba for the reales of the captives.
