I wouldn't really consider The Giver's society to be Utopian but that can be debated. One of the main reasons I don't consider The Giver's society to be Utopian is because one of the requirements for a Utopian society is that it's better then what we have now. In some ways it is better but in other ways it isn't. Examples would be like releasing the old or a baby, or that family doesn't quite work out in that society.

Sara Mohamed
I agree with Ethan and would like to add that, The Giver is not really a utopian society. I say this because in the giver everyone must be the same. The giver society sees this as equality however, this society still has it flaws. I think this worsens the society compared to ours because we are learning to be diverse unlike in the giver.

I say that because a Utopian society is supposed to be all happy and thing/ everything is supposed to be so perfect but in the giver its like everybody is so miserable. Another reason a Utopian society is suppose to be way be better that the world we live in now but really that world in the giver is going down hill.

Calys-I agree with Ethan ,Sara and kelechi that the utopian society that they are representing in the giver Isn’t really much of a utopian society. This society has way more flaws then it really shows on the outside. Although it might seem like this an equal society-or a society that’s as no flaws, the reality of this society is just pushing everyone away from each other so your set up for the future . For instance in their society Jonas was chosen to be a certain someone anyways he already has things that are bothering him and he is made to face them on his own and not to mention he still a kid 🧒. To add on this society really sucks because when Jonas was given certain memories he wanted to share them and some memories weren’t so pleasant and he needed someone to tell . Lastly this society is so messed up that when Jonas came across a memory that made him feel good (love)he asked his parents but the most shocking thing about that is that the way his parent were set up to react when they were wer

I agree with Calys, Ethan, Kelichi, and Sara. The society in The Giver is messed up, rigged and it is set to make it seem as if the government is doing the right thing but are they really. Adding on to what Calys said Jonas's parents denied the question Jonas asked if they loved him. They hesitated at first and then they said that the use of the word is inappropriate. The way families in this society is set up is kind of like adoption. When adopted you either get a foster family who abuses you and takes advantage of you or a family that cares for you as if you are their own. However if they do care for you as their own the mother does not have a choose other than to give up their child. That family will love them as their own but no one can ever replace the love that their mother had for them. The government is also corrupt because when twins are born the twin that weighs more is kept however the other twin is released into elsewhere. But what exactly is elsewhere. The people in this society are thought to believe that elsewhere is a great place but they fail to realize that they actually don't know what elsewhere is. The government is keeping secrets from the citizens but the government is making it seem as if the citizens are dumb because they are listening to them.

The giver is not a Utopian society because it does not have a lot of happiness or love which is important for a utopian society. You need happiness to have fun and enjoy the world. The giver does not have much happiness. We only see the side of a couple of families and some of the families can feel un happy on the inside. I'd like to agree with Sara that everyone is the society seems the same and everyone is equal which makes it a little utopian. But utopian means "perfect" and the giver is not.

The writer wanted to hide the dystopian making everything sound so good, then later on revealing the hidden dystopia in The Giver. Utopian is usually someplace that looks perfect but isn’t because just as the story of the monkey hand said everything comes with a price. The price for not feeling pain was to wipes everyone’s memory and give it to one person to bear. The price of not making bad choices was to take away choices. People don’t even realize this in life. People think everything comes so easy until they realize what they lost. This is why I think perfection will destroy us. People want to always be the perfect person, without realizing how much they sacrificed for what. I think that striving for a utopia will have more flaws. Nothings ever perfect.

An example is that the Government tells you what to do. In a Utopian society i would think that everyone is free to do whatever they want to do as long as it's good. In the givers society you are also not allowed to have the amount of kids you want to have. This also does not make the givers society a utopia because people should be allowed to have the amount of kids they want to have. Their is also no love in the Givers society. Without love the world would just be dark and serious and not joyful.

The giver is not a utopian society because it is not the perfect community. I say this because the people in that community don't get to learn the history about their community also there is to much secrets hidden in that community. Also they don't get to experience love or grandparents. They really don't know what it is like having a family it's like they just have a family to have one. They also take pills so they can't experience love like most humans do experience love. It is just so boring in their lives also they don't have identical twins in this world they only have Fraternal twins because they don't want them to get to attached to their family. So these are my reasons why the giver is not a utopian community.

I don't think we can call The Giver an ideal Utopian society. They had to make to many sacrifices, such as give up their feelings, emotions, and colors. They have to release there elderly and not ideal babies. They can't make their own choices, like the jobs they would be doing or ability to birth their own children. I do think that a perfect society is possible and it is OK to dream about it, but it takes a lot of work and collaboration.
