Does Theory Matter?

Stephanie! You started your discussion about theory by identifying that you know what you value. Most identity searches begin with the questions you asked, what is important to me, then that informs how you approach your instruction and initiatives. You mentioned it is important to consider how learning theories have changed over time too. I know that our past informs us that historical events will impact learning theories, for example the ‘space race’. I wonder if you think that the pandemic we are presently experiencing will alter learning theory in the long-run.

What do you think?

If it does, I bet we will see a shift towards theories that humanize learning experiences, even with the ever present technology. I know over the past year of teaching with ‘new approaches’ was not necessarily new, but recontexted, or remixed to be possible asynchronously, or in digital spaces.

Do you think there will be any other theory shifts because of this world-wide event? Do you think it will impact how we approach teaching and learning?

Stephanie you took time to think about current initiatives, although you may not have had a voice in the decision making around those initiatives, you did determine how your values would inform your implementation.

Hey Stephanie! I read the goals you discussed in this post and I really connected with them. I too would prefer my students illustrate their comprehension beyond written word and forced choice. Personally, I enjoy asking my students to apply their knowledge during real life scenarios. Not only does it illustrate comprehension, it's simply more fun than a quiz or exam. So, I just wanted to pop in and say, we're not so different, you and I!
P.S. Love your website! Great work!

Re-Design Aspirations

I really like the focus of your re-design project. When I was a student I hated reading because of the fact that it was always just read-discuss-answer questions. It was such a repetitive format that was not engaging to me at all that I lost all interest at a young age, and it actually turned me off to reading. It became so repetitive in fact that I actually passed a unit on a novel without reading a single page in high school (I just went of class discussions), which just shows to me that there really was not much meaning behind the class at all. I feel I would have benefited from your style of teaching the unit you discussed with the Westing Game because it would have allowed me to make those real life connections that interest readers.

I feel your Google form will be very helpful in how to outline this better because what is better than getting input from the students who are actually going to be doing the learning? I really appreciate that you see the importance in this and wish I had a teacher that cared about the engagement of their students like you seem to be doing. Great job!

Hi Stephanie,
I am so glad I came across your visual metaphor, I absolutely love it. It reminded me a lot of myself. I enjoy playing board games with my friends. We always read the instructions and try to figure it out. We all look at each other and shrug and then full up a Youtube video of someone explaining it. It is super beneficial to have another person explain it as well as visual directions.
- Zahra Kazmi

Hello Stephanie! I enjoyed reading your redesign aspirations. I like how open you are to your student's suggestions. I wanted to ask what kind of questions you had on the Google Form and what were the responses like for your survey? I'd be so interested to hear because I would love to know what student's think would make the reading unit more engaging. For example, my third graders seem to love reader's theater and anything they can "act out" with reading.

Wow, I was blown away by your drawing for this post! What a fun and creative way to share a skill of yours (drawing) with teaching and learning! Your point of how all theories are not 100% accurate was something that stood out to me. I agree that there are so many factors that go into student learning and behavior that we cannot use a one size fits all model. I also think it would be detrimental to student learning and motivation to try to bring only one learning theory into a classroom and have every student learn only that one way especially in today's society where we have so many more resources than we did before. I think you are "practicing what you preach" based on your comment on how you allow students to work independently or with peers, build a positive environment, demonstrate the learning process, and you failure as a teaching moment. Keep up the great work and I hope the rest of the school years ends on a high note! - Sabrina Kay
