But, the only country that has actually used them is China. More than 30  agencies have used them for business purposes. But, the central government of certain regions have actually used them to spy on their people. These birds are so realistic that they can fly on their own and they attract other birds, which helps make them blend in more. Also, they make little to no sound.




How does this relate to 1984?

In 1984, the people are under surveillance 24/7 because the Party wants to make sure that they don’t do anything suspicious that would go against them.  In this article, the robotic doves in China have been used to keep people under surveillance so that there are no issues with separatism, which would go against the central government.

How does this relate to 1984?

In 1984, the citizens are very well aware that they are being watched, one of the main sayings of the novel is “Big Brother is watching you”.  So, because they are aware that they are being watched, it affects the way they act.  I believe most of the citizens, except Winston, are putting a “mask” over their real personality.  The idea that they are being watched changes them very much and in the article, it provides scenarios that are very close to what is happening in 1984.
