As a future educator, I recognize that teachers wear many hats and have a large workload. Time management is priority in this profession and something I am trying to be better at. I recognize that oftentimes problems that need solutions can arise out of nowhere which can be challenging to manage a workload. I think that setting firm boundaries with yourself and having an end point is good for managing the workload as a teacher. I think that creating to do lists in rank of priority is beneficial and saving things for the next day and having a “tomorrow is a new day” mindset can be helpful.

I have a had time balancing work and personal life. Even now, I tend to miss out on a lot of family time especially on the weekends because I am trying to get ahead of class work and planning activities for clinical. I don’t want to miss out on time with family and friends because I am so focused on work. I know planning ahead helps me and reduces anxiety, but I need to find a balance of work, family, and time to myself.

I also have a hard time asking for help. I am very nervous to be a first year teacher because coming up with every lesson in such a short period of time sounds crazy! I am getting better at asking my CT for help, but I hope the teachers I work with at my first job are open and willing to help.

I know that in the beginning it’ll definitely be challenging managing all of the workload. Especially with paperwork regarding the employment process, transitioning from student teacher paperwork to actual teacher paperwork, and having my own set of students and responsibilities. I know that as time goes on it’ll become like second nature, but I also know that I need that hectic-ness in the beginning to expose me to different ways that I can create my managing skills.

Josie Blundo

Some challenges that you might foresee when trying to manage your workload as an educator could be time management, support, and parent involvement. Time management can include your personal time management as well as the time management of the school. It can be challenging if certain events or noticed or given late or close to deadlines with little to no notice. Support and parent involvement can create a challenge of the workload because when you trying to manage your workload it can help if there is support. When that support is lacking, the workload can become even greater. Similarly to parent involvement, managing workload can be difficult if the parents or family of the students are not involved to a certain extent it can be difficult or challenging to complete certain tasks or work that needs to be done or work that would be beneficial to the students.

Some challenges I may see is balancing my lesson plans, grading and maybe some responsibilities outside the classroom that administrators may want me to participate in. Also, tying in personal responsibilities may be difficult since my school work load can be time consuming and overwhelming. So balancing work and my personal life might conflict and I will have to find time for myself. I think leaving work at work, and not bring work home will help me balance the two.

Some challenges that I might foresee when trying to manage my workload as an educator would be not accommodating my students the right way with their assigned work. Unfortunately in the school I’m working at as a Dual Language educator, in my Spanish language arts classroom I have students whose first language is not Spanish and they feel so lost being in it. Unfortunately, we can’t break our code of not speaking any other language unless it’s Spanish during instruction, and I fear that it will happen in my classroom and that I would fail my students because they are not acquiring the right skills in comparison to my other students.

Some challenges I foresee are finding how much of the content you should be teaching and how much time you have to teach it. Often, you are tasked with teaching multiple things in a day. However, it is difficult to anticipate what challenges you may face during the day which can make it difficult to know how much you should prepare. Another challenge is balancing your students needs. It can be difficult to find ways to meet the needs to all the students in your class, given the different personalities they may have.

A school-life balance can be a foreseeable struggle where life gets the short end of the stick because I am tired and spent from managing 20+ students a week and stop doing things I used to do.
