Breathing is a complicated thing for your body to do. The first part of breathing in is when small hairs in your nose filter out particles. These hairs are called cilia. The second part is when blood vessels in your nose warm the air coming in. The third part is when mucous membrane moistens the air before it goes into your body.

There is only one 'pipe' and it is split. The trachea is one part of the pipe, which carries air to the lungs. The other is the esophagus, which carries food and water to the stomach. What usually prevents water and food going down the trachea is the epiglottis. The epiglottis is a small flap of skin that covers the trachea when eating and drinking but opens when breathing. The water/food goes down the trachea if you are laughing and then swallow water.
