Leptin - a hormone produced and secreted by the adipose tissues
Blood leptin concentration is controlled by food intake and the amount of adipose tissues in your body.
What do they do?

Leptin receptors can be found in the hypothalamus of the brain

the hypothalamus is the appetite control centre of the brain

once received by receptors they cause appetite inhibition

if fat mass decreases, the level of plasma leptin falls so that appetite is stimulated until fat mass recovers

if fat mass increases, leptin levels increase and appetite is suppressed until weight loss occurs

leptin regulates energy intake and fat stores

makes sure weight is maintained in a narrow range

Leptin Resistance

People who are obese have very high levels of leptin in their blood. This implies that the receptor cells are no longer responsive to leptin, so appetite is not inhibited. This leads to obesity.
Mutated Gene
The gene that codes for leptin is called OB, and when it is not mutated it correctly codes for leptin. If it becomes mutated, it will not code correctly for leptin. Without functional leptin, no leptin signal is received by the hypothalamus, so appetite is not inhibited, which causes obesity.

This causes an enlargement of the thyroid gland. Treatment involves supplementation with iodine tablets or increasing the amount of iodine in the diet with foods like fish, dairy products, and iodized salt.
