My name is Ian McFarland and I am pursuing a certification in psychology and social studies education at the secondary level. I am twenty-three years old and am originally from Pennsylvania, where I lived until I graduated from high school at which time I moved to Michigan to attend Calvin College.  I received my bachelor’s degree from Calvin in 2015, graduating with a double major in psychology and business. After a year off in which I tutored several individuals with learning and developmental disabilities, I decided that I wanted to make a career out of teaching and enrolled at Grand Valley as an undergrad in order to obtain a teachable major in social studies. I completed my undergrad studies this past year, and am looking forward to getting the chance to apply what I have learned in a real world setting, while furthering my understanding of what it means to be a teacher. On a more personal note, I live with 3 of my friends from college in a house that I co-own with my parents a few miles from downtown Grand Rapids. I enjoy running, reading, playing chess, ping pong, and spending time with friends.

My wife and I have small business that takes up most of my spare time. I like to garden and try to camp and go to the beach a few times every summer. Here is a picture of me on a unicorn. The kids at the dance studio got a real kick out of it. It became famous among my social circles and is now available as a T-shirt on Amazon.

Hobbies: Sports.  I like watching and talking about sports.  Baseball is my favorite, but I also like football, basketball, hockey and soccer.  I’ve coached basketball, golf and soccer.  I also love the outdoors and I find myself at peace when I’m outside.  I enjoy going out for a hike, a walk, a bike ride, or camping.  I just enjoy the wonder of the world around me.  It probably sounds strange but I really like looking at rocks.  
Family:  I am the middle child.  I have an older brother who lives in Phoenix and a younger sister who lives in Byron Center.  I am also adding one to my family as I’m getting married on December 29.  Amber and I are very excited.

Hobbies: Everyone who knows me personally knows that my life has revolved around two primary interests; auto racing and running.Each have been part of my life for many years and I enjoy them immensely During my extended time at GVSU, I spent most of my years in the running club where I finished as President/VP. I've run everything from the 4x400, to steeplechase, to 5k, to the marathon. I raced go karts for 8 years.  I covered NASCAR for 5 years on my own blog and other various publications with dreams of calling races for radio/TV. Sadly, I had to leave this behind as I could not uproot to North Carolina and work for little to no income. I still watch every weekend, just as I have ever since I can remember. However, it has allowed me to do many different things in life. I was the assistant boys cross country coach for Jenison High School last season and am still active within the program. I hope one day to be able to coach cross country and track and give back to the sport that has given me more than I could have ever imagined.

Fun Stuff: I really enjoy mountain biking and hiking as well as trail running. It is also likely to find me with a book on hand everywhere I go incase the opportunity arises. We have since adopted her. January of this year, we decided to adopt a group of three siblings who were ready for a forever home. They are 4, 5 and nearly 7.
