Anabel and Sofìa´s definition:

According to us, the growth mindset is a tool that allows you to get out of your circle without being afraid of failure. Having this type of mindset will help you develop your intelligence and take advantage of learning activities. Also, the fixed mindset is believing that our abilities will never change, because our intelligence will never be enough.

Therefore, as future teachers we must be aware of what mindset our students are in so that we can create change through innovation and systemic change.

Definition according to class:

The growth mindset consists of being able to learn from mistakes, being challenged by them and being able to understand them as a new opportunity to learn. For this intelligence to develop we have to work hard and if necessary be open to ask for help.

What does growth mindset and fixed mindset look like according to psychologist Carol Dweck?

According to the psychologist, we are all composed of both mindsets, even though we sometimes tend to identify more with one.

The growth mindset, according to the psychologist, is based on understanding our abilities as talents, which can be developed through hard work, support and strategies. On the other hand, a fixed mindset is based on believing that all those skills are basic and can never be developed.

As a teachers at what point will this concept be seen in the classroom?

In the classroom this will serve us as future teachers to identify our students through their actions and the way they develop within the classroom. For example, if our student manages to develop with confidence in the teaching of english within the classroom and is open to any help from teachers or classmates we will know that he has a growth mindset, but is the our student remains silent and oblivious to participate or asks any questions we will know that he has a fixed mindset.

Sofia and Anabel´s definition:

Stereotypes are ideas or beliefs we have about a group of people, based on characteristics we believe they all share. We can occupy positive and negative stereotypes. Positive stereotypes help us connect with other people; negative stereotypes encourage discrimination and perpetuate social inequalities.

Definition according to class:

A stereotype is an exaggerated belief, image or distorted truth about a person or group—a generalization that allows for little or no individual differences or social variation. Stereotypes are based on images in mass media, or reputations passed on by parents, peers and other members of society. Stereotypes can be positive or negative.

How the stereotypes are represented in the film?

The film chronicles the journey of three cabaret performers, two drag queens and a trans woman, on a bus called ‘Priscilla’ through the Australian outback to perform a show. The story touches on issues such as sexual diversity, gender identity and family in an emotional and witty way.

For example, this is represented through one of the main characters who is married and has a son, which is unusual, since she is a drag queen. This is also seen in the way they treat her when they are dressed as women, how the men try to help them in everything and attend to anything they want, but when they realize the reality, they become aggressive and violent.

As a teachers at what point will this concept be seen in the classroom?

As a teachers, we will encounter a number of stereotypes, whether class or gender stereotypes, which can affect the learning and development of our students. Therefore, we must be able to recognise them and deal with them responsibly through critical thinking, gender equity and healthy coexistence in the classroom.

Sofia and Anabel´s definition:

They are perceptions we have of people that are formed

before we meet them. Sometimes they can be good or bad.

Definition according to class:

This concept is a tendency, positive or negative, directed towards a person or situation. Usually, these biases will help us make good decisions, however, these biases are also often based on stereotypes rather than true knowledge of people or circumstances. These spiritual shortcuts can lead to hasty judgements and unjustified or discriminatory decisions. The most common examples of unjustified biases are prejudices based on ethnicity, gender, religion or social group, rather than an appreciation of one's own individuality.

The stereotypes and biases are fundamental to fostering a growth mindset that drives learning and personal development. The stereotypes generate simplified beliefs about people's abilities, which can foster a fixed mindset, where abilities are thought to be innate and immutable.

How the stereotypes are represented in the film?

In the video Verna Myers argues that prejudices are unconscious ideas that we all have, formed either by cultural stereotypes or by the influence of networks or the media. These prejudices are unconscious when we judge people without knowing them, she gives the example of black people who are judged every day by the bad perspective of the media or society. She comments that these prejudices will always be in society, but that if we want to change them, we must open our social circle and take the risk of getting to know people without judging them by their skin colour. According to her, getting out of our comfort zone is the key so that the famous prejudices of judging without knowing are no longer so visible.

As a teachers at what point will this concept be seen in the classroom?

As a teachers we will be confronted with biases that affect mainly the students, these will cause multiple problems within the classroom, such as: inequality, the promotion of racism, due to prejudices from outside, and problems in learning, participation and well-being of the students, therefore we will have to be able to promote within the classroom inclusion, respect and empathy in order to build a good environment where all students feel listened to.

To do this, they must develop skills that allow them to analyze objectively and avoid data that fall into an oversimplification that distorts reality. In addition, fostering empathy and understanding of individual perspectives helps students to understand and recognize the prosperity that all experiences have in the world.
