Pamela fishers theory consists of an experiment involving the review of fifty-two hours pf pre recorded conversations between young american couples varying from the ages of twenty-five and thirty-five interacting with each other. All subjects involved were feminists, sympathetic to the womens movement or white. This could be considered to condense the variable immensely, limits the potential results that could be gained from this experiment.
she focused on the two main characteristics common in womens dialect, including tag questions. these were the first thing Fisherman examined withe the frequently used tag questions such as 'isnt it' and 'couldnt we'.
Fisherman analysed the phrase 'you know' as a way to confirm the other participant(s) are in fact paying attention to the main conductor of the conversation. Also the use of it in the way of an invitation for somebody to contrabute to the conversation. during her study Fisherman discovered that women used four times as many yes and no tag questions as men. however her opinion on these results weren't that women were uncertain as Lakoff suggested, but it was due to the fact that women are generally keeping the conversation going. To conclude; the way women communicate is not due to lack of social development, but to the inferior social position of women.
