Baptism occurs a few days after birth, although adults are also baptized. The ceremony is an induction into Christian society and Christian faith. The common factor is the use of water, a symbol of spiritual purification. According to the Roman Catholic law, godparents are required to attend the baptism ceremony. An infant is often given a name during baptism. This is called Christening.

Death

Christ´s resurrection is proof that death can be a passage to life eternal. For Catholics, at the moment of death, people are judged according to how they lived their lives. Either heaven, hell or purgatory awaits them. Purgatory is where their souls are cleansed and made ready for union with God. A sacrament once called Extreme Unction, and now called the Last Rites or Anointing of the sick, is often given to gravely ill people. In some country', a wake, or period of mourning and prayer, precedes the funeral.
