Part A: I.) The Basketball Literacy Community: What There is to Know?

To have a solid understanding and be articulated in the language of basketball, one needs to be aware of the strategic aspects apart of the game, mathematical applications involved for evaluation, along with a diversity of individual play styles and environments involved in the game of basketball. Verbal communication plays a significant part in what basketball is as being able to identify and adapt to the offensive/defensive plays being executed by your opponents by yourself is important. This can be done in the forms of shouting out short play calls with a given name (ie. Cougar, UCLA, or 5 Out) or phrases that can be said amongst teammates, communicating an action (ie. Drop Down, Get in Help, or Watch Weak Side). It is important to alert your teammates who might not be as aware of a specific time to keep everyone on the same page, enhancing team success. These alerts include redirecting your teammate and which mentally places back on track. On the subject of communication, an effective conversation done efficiently helps with fast-paced situations, making up the entirety of the game. Conversation in the game can also be considered in the sense of leadership and motivation as words said through the lows of the game to boost the team’s confidence and refocus the team’s mindset. The game of basketball also incorporates non-verbal communication (ie. hand signals), communicating plays to run and certain messages that can come from your teammates and coaches in games and more often in practices since there isn’t enough time for a larger conversation. The general messages spread might be short and consisting of simplistic terms, however, it’s what’s necessary to get across the idea that works to the end goal of team success.

Part B: I.) The Best Part of the Basketball Literacy Community

The most enjoyable part about speaking the language of basketball is that it allows me to understand what certain actions coaches want me to perform during practices or games along with words that my teammates may be exchanged with me. Basketball consists of quick moves and decisions which I have learned to adapt to through an understanding of the game's components. My coaches might ask me to move a certain way on offense, alter my motions on the defensive end, or even let me know of some areas physically and mentally I can improve upon (i.e. leadership and actions on and off the court). Overall, I am aware that there are always areas apart of my individual game to work on, and having an understanding of the basketball language allows me to focus on my weaknesses and polish off my strengths. These things that I can recognize and can apply to the court benefit my personal growth and performance while allowing my teammates to do the same and ultimately, allows the team the best chances to win.

Part A: II.) The Texting Literacy World: How to Become Fluent

To be fluent and grasp the ability to be articulate in the texting language, a person must identify the general principles that are apart of texting different people, the art of emotion that can assist the meaning of text messages, and the wide diversity of ways messages can be interpreted from the emojis and other factors in a message. Nonverbal communication is the central idea of texting as people are communicating through devices any may do so using emojis, text, and capitalization to send various messages with their unique connotations. Emojis play a vital part in a text message to compliment text messages, with the numerous amounts of them available to be applied in several scenarios. Texting is a form of communicating I find easier to do as it allows emotion to be used into messages without the verbal interaction that sometimes difficult to accomplish. Slang is another key component in texting as these quick, informal phrases are meant to express a given idea in a shorter amount of time. For example, phrases including “nvm”, “lol’, “smh”, and “lmk” are just a few of the various terms that can be used to express the same idea of saying the phrase to its entirety. These two applications inside of the possibilities in text messaging support how to become articulate in the literacy community.

The best part about being involved in the texting literacy community is being able to write effective text messages that get my point across with a variety of ways to do so. One concern is how text messages can be easily misinterpreted, though understanding the components of the literacy community allow for such messages to be understood with no confusion whatsoever. With the fast, advancing technologies upon us, texting is a form of communication performed faster than ever that enables sending messages of all sorts that allow for conversation.

Part C: Basketball, Texting, and it's Connections

The literacies of basketball and texting only have few relations in my life. The ideal connection among the literacies is the verbal communication and conversation that must be done from person to person in order to get the general message across. In basketball, I often use short and quick messages like I do when I’m texting to get the general message across as quickly as possible to improve team success. Time management is a part of my life that needs to be efficient to perform my best in school, so quick messages that are to the point allows me to save time and still get out the general message in less time. One other interesting connection between the two literacy communities is how when I’m both playing basketball and texting friends or family, I am performing these two actions with the overall purpose of receiving a positive outcome. For instance, when I’m playing basketball plays are ran and communication is one to execute and win. Then in the texting aspect, I send messages to others for a specific purpose, whether it may be helpful or for enjoyment. In the grand scheme of things, basketball and texting both accompany the benefits of swift conversation, though basketball’s purpose for it is more significant.
