The story is set in Chicago 2035.

Detective Del Spooner (Will Smith) investigates the suspicious death of Dr. Alfred Lanning, a robotics scientist at U.S. Robotics.

Spooner hates robots.

He has potential suspicions in the robots, despite the supposed impossibility of robots harming humans due to the Three Laws of Robotics.

His investigation leads to the discovery of VIKI's (the main AI system) plan to take control to "protect" humanity from itself.
