Assess: The SENCO and class teacher, in consultation with parents and professionals, conduct a detailed assessment of the child's needs, identifying specific barriers to learning. This process is ongoing and helps in a growing understanding of the child's difficulties.

Plan: Based on the assessment, the school and parents agree on the expected outcomes (targets), the support and teaching strategies required, and a date for the next review. This plan is often captured in an SEN Support Plan or a Pupil Passport.

Do: The school puts the agreed-upon support plan into practice. The class teacher remains responsible for the daily learning, but the SENCO and any support staff work closely to track progress and ensure the provision is effective.

Review: The effectiveness of the support is reviewed regularly (typically termly) by all involved parties, including parents and the pupil. The review evaluates the progress made toward the agreed outcomes. The results of the review inform the next cycle of assessment and planning, adjusting the support as needed.

The school makes the necessary referrals for specialist assessment and, where it deems necessary, for a request for an Education Health Care, EHC, assessment. This can lead to an EHC Plan, above is the timeframe for this process.

Provision of interim enhanced adult support whilst the process runs is extremely limited. However, it may be made at the level to support a pupil's emotional regulation where it disrupts learning.

When an EHCP is in place, personalised assessment arrangements, individual target setting and personalised progress tracking and assessment are managed through an ongoing assess, plan, do and review process that includes annual reviews.

The provision outlined in section F of the EHCPs for all the children with one currently at the school, forms the model of provision at the different banding levels. This is how the school balances a strategic approach to provision and the individual needs of each child.

The school aims to meet as many needs as possible through adaptation of the curriculum planned for the age of the child. However, we accept children as they are and that their stage of development may not be the same as their age. When children are working significantly outside of their chronological year group, teachers need to plan beyond adaptation and differentiation is required. This may require a personalised curriculum where staff draw on the knowledge of teachers with specialist experience and/or qualifications. This NASEN document explains the role of differentiation in current pedagogy.

Originally developed by Speech and Language Therapist Alison Bryan, this approach breaks down sentences into individual components and assigns each one a colour-coded visual cue. These cues help learners to understand and construct grammatically correct sentences, improving both oral and written communication through Colourful Semantics for oracy development.

There are six levels of LEG which align with the National Curriculum Programme of study. Children can be identified as needing a Language Enrichment Group (LEG) if: • It has been recommended by a Speech and Language Therapist; • They have completed the LEG level below, but still require additional support (e.g. completed LEG 2 and are moving onto LEG 3); • You have identified a suitable pupil from reading the LEG description for a particular level.

Attention Autism is a learning approach that aims to develop natural and spontaneous communication skills for autistic children through the use of visually based and highly motivating activities.

The origins of the approach are in the idea that successful communication is dynamic, engaging and joyful. People learn best when they are filled with enthusiasm, motivation and creativity. The Attention Autism approach should provide children with a learning experience that they want to communicate about.

What are The Zones of Regulation?

The zones of regulation are a framework designed to help individuals, especially children, develop self-regulation skills and emotional control.

The framework categorises emotions and states of alertness into four colour-coded zones, each representing a different level of emotional regulation. The four zones are:

Blue Zone (Low Energy/Down): In this zone, individuals may feel sad, tired, sick, or bored. The Blue Zone is associated with low energy and a lower state of alertness.

Green Zone (Good to Go): The Green Zone represents a calm and focused state. People in this zone feel happy, content, and ready to learn. It is the optimal zone for learning and social interactions.

Yellow Zone (Heightened State of Alertness): The Yellow Zone indicates a heightened state of alertness. Individuals may be experiencing stress, frustration, excitement, or anxiety. It's a state where individuals are not in complete control but are not out of control either.

Red Zone (High Alert/Overwhelmed): The Red Zone represents an extremely heightened state of alertness and intense emotions. Individuals may be angry, terrified, or out of control. The Red Zone is associated with a loss of control over one's emotions and actions.
