Examples of gender performativity by Borbi Gaspar

Activity : In the first week you learned about gender performativity and we talked about the role that space and community have on our agency and actions. I am sure that what we discussed made you think about the society we live in and the power of social construction. Gender performativity by Judith Butler did probably make you think about how we construct what is normal and what is not. Look around and find something interesting that you noticed /reflected on. Can be a video, image, citation, article or just your report on these topics. As an example, think of for instance the colors associated to newborns as soon as they born.

After Judith Butler's explanation of what gender performativity means and how it is seen in society, it left me questioning how I would present myself if I was not molded by these societal expectations regarding gender. Would I still like the same things? Would I still dress the way I do now, cut my hair the same way, walk, talk, or act the same way?
I also thought it was interesting the way Butler described "performativity" itself and how the definition of it is superfluous and everchanging. They said that, "performativity names the way that social reality can change over time". Gender roles have and will continue to change as long as people keep breaking the gender roles assigned to them.
