The idea that forms of birth control such as the IUD and emergency contraceptives are considered abortion has come from strictly anti-abortion organizations. This idea promotes a false narrative that taking birth control is the same as having an abortion. I think it is important to differentiate between the two. "A contraceptive method, by definition, prevents pregnancy by interfering with ovulation, fertilization or implantation. Abortion ends an established pregnancy, after implantation" (guttmacher.org).

Scientifically, pregnancy starts on the first day of the last menstrual period. This means that six weeks of pregnancy is technically only four weeks after conception. The average menstrual cycle is about two weeks. However, this cycle can change due to stress, weight gain/loss, birth control, polycystic ovarian syndrome, the list goes on. This leaves a window of roughly one week for a woman to figure out she is pregnant, which does not allot hardly any time for her to process that she is pregnant, decide what she wants to do, and, if she so chooses, schedule an appointment for an abortion.

Limiting access or abortion doesn't necessarily mean that all abortions will go away, it just means that they will be done unsafely. For example, if a woman does not have access to a legal abortion, she may try to perform it herself by breaking the amniotic sac with a sharp object. If this is done, it can cause injury and/or infection to the internal organs, which can result in the death of the woman. Over 22,800 women die from an unsafe abortion every year. When there is a lack of access to birth control, unintended pregnancies that are carried to term lead to overall poor health outcomes such as issues as an infant (such as low birth weight), infant mortality, and maternal mortality (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
