Summer Week 6: Give an example of the unique selling proposition for one of your favorite brands. Then think of yourself as a brand. What is your unique selling proposition (USP)—the distinct combination of strengths, skills, and qualities that set you apart from others? Describe how these traits give you an advantage in school, work, or personal projects, and why someone would choose to work with you or trust you over others. Be specific: include examples of times you’ve demonstrated this USP and how you could continue to communicate it in your personal ‘brand’ going forward. by Jonathan Gordon

One of my favorite brands in the makeup and skincare brand Clinique. They make a shade of mascara and lip products that match my skin tone and hair very well. Their unique selling proposition is "Dermatologist-developed, safe, and effective skincare products." They pride themselves on having safe products that do not have toxins or harmful chemicals in them that will negatively affect your skin. The strengths of this USP would be that the products are tested by dermatologists in order to ensure the products are fit for skin. A skill would be how the company develops the formulas for the products, making sure they are skin safe and effective. A quality would be the quality of the product. Clinique prides themselves on having quality and effective products to provide their consumers with. These traits of this company would give someone an advantage in school, work, or personal projects because of how they make you feel. Putting safe, effective products on your skin will make you feel good, both because of how you look, and how the products will not harm you. Feeling good may not seem incredibly impactful, but most people tend to be more productive and motivated when they are confident. Bot consumers and businesses would be more likely to trust this company and work with them because they have a USP that is proven to be true. they do not lie about their products, and they are completely transparent with their processes. I have demonstrated this USP by using these products and proving that they are safe for the skin and effective in making me feel good. Continuing to communicate the USP moving forward would be to continue to wear the makeup, and showing others how well it works.

One of my favorite brands is Peachybbies. It is an online slime store with a large following on YouTube. When you order a slime it comes in a small cute container. With that container is extra activator, and stickers. Peachybbies has a unique selling proposition, it comes hand packaged, with the added bonus of stickers, a bracelet and free activator. This makes the consumer feel as if the packager took time packing the product and that they respect the consumer. The stickers give a more personal feel while the other small free items make the product seem much less expensive. Each business and person has a unique selling proposition. For me, I am a redhead. I am pretty easy to spot in a crowd or the back of a group photo. My hair catches people's attention, and that's the goal of USP, to stand out. Like a business, consumers have to have interest and interact with the business. The same is for school and work. To fully sell myself, I would have to interact with others. I would have to share information about themselves and communicate well with them. Communication is a very important selling point, If my "brand" did not communicate with others, then my brand would fail. The same is true for friends communication allows for a stronger friendship and more trust. I often communicate with friends, in school, online, and over text and call. I show others that I am supportive, and I will listen if they need me to listen, and talk when they need me to talk. Being a reliable friend and human being is important for long lasting friendships and careers. Going forward I will interact with others, communicate with people I don't know well, this will be a major "selling point' for me. Advertising myself to others can allow me to gain more acquaintances and friends. Even if we do not realize it, we are always marketing ourselves, even when we talk to family we are advertising ourselves. Daily human interaction is almost one big advertisement, and people attempt to get others to like them. When people find out what their unique selling proposition is, then they will be able to find companions, friends, and jobs better.

One of my favorite brands is Benchmade Knives; their unique selling proposition is high-quality craftsmanship and reliability, which matters when you’re outdoors and need gear you can count on. As a Boy Scout and someone who leads my troop, I’ve used Benchmade knives on camping trips and service projects, and they’ve always held up. If I were a brand, my USP would be dependability and preparedness. I like to be ready for whatever comes up—whether it’s organizing a hike, supporting younger scouts, or ensuring things run smoothly behind the scenes. I don’t always take the spotlight, but I try to be the person others can rely on. That same mindset carries over into school, where I stay focused, follow through on assignments, and work well with classmates on group projects. Whether it’s prepping for a test or helping a team meet a deadline, I aim to be consistent and supportive. Going forward, I’ll keep building my personal brand by staying active in scouting, being a good teammate, and continuing to learn from the people around me, both in and out of the classroom.

One of my favorite brands is Portland Leather Co, whose unique selling proposition lies in offering high-quality leather goods at surprisingly accessible prices. Their products stand out because they’re not just fashionable, but built to last. If were a brand, my USP would be my willingness to take on any project, no matter how big, small, or challenging it might be. I’m not afraid to take on new challenges, figure things out, and work until the job is done, which helps me succeed in school, work, and personal projects. This willingness, however, can make me a little stubborn— I avoid involving others because I want full control over how it turns out, even if I end up stressed and the final product isn't my best. I know collaboration can make the final result even better, so that's something I'm working on. People choose to work with me because they know I’ll take ownership, stay reliable under pressure, and follow through no matter what. Moving forward, I can strengthen my personal brand by learning to balance that determination and independence with being a stronger team player.

My favorite brand is LoveShackFancy. LoveShackFancy is a high end clothing line, known for their pieces featuring bows, lace, and florals. Their clothing line brings a youthful, feminine, and whimsical element to the sometimes oversaturated designer fashion industry. They also foster a magical in store experience by using small boutique like store fronts to give each customer a more personalized experience. My USP based on LoveShackFancy is mixing personal and creative style into everyday life. An example of this was my Child Development final last year. When tasked with creating our own children's storybook, most of my classmates chose to make simple paper books. I choose to take a more creative approach and use online platforms to make my book. I used elements of my own personal style throughout the entire book, meticulously crafting each page. Due to my creativity, I had the best rated book in the class, and was asked by the teacher to be used as an example for the years to come. Going forward, I will continue to use my style to give projects and assignments an added flair.

One of my favorite brands is Nike, their unique selling proposition is developing cutting edge athletic footwear and apparel by using advanced technology and building emotional connections with customers. Nike stands out compared to competitors because of their strong brand identity, if you asked majority of people what Nike's slogan is, they would tell you "Just Do It". Their marketing techniques are unmatched by any other athletic brands and give customers motivation to improve and get better in life overall and the athletic activity that they are competing in or are interested in. I think that my unique selling proposition would be that I am detail oriented and have a very structured personality, I want to make sure the things that I am doing are being done well and not just halfheartedly. These traits give me an advantage in school because I am able to stand out from classmates because I strive for my work to be well organized and done thoroughly. Someone would have the trust to work with me over others because they know that everything we are doing will be planned out and on track to be completed as well as being done to the best of our abilities. Some examples of using this USP in my life are when I work on group projects or posters in school, before my group starts working on the poster, I make sure that we have everything planned out first, so we are not putting any incorrect information into our project. I also make sure that our poster/project is organized and has a smooth flow of speaking and presenting as well as being well organized and well thought out because I make sure we don't leave out small details and efforts that make a big difference in the end result. I will continue to use this personal brand by continuing to stay organized even when I get overwhelmed and always think about the little details when I am doing something important because they matter too.

My favorite brand is Simply Southern. It is a brand that is mostly found down South. Growing up in Georgia, it was everywhere. When you think of this brand, you think of the sayings on back of t-shirts that give you motivation. They use different slogans like "LET THEM. Good vibes only today and everyday", and "Do what you love, Love what you do". Simply Southern has always encouraged a positive lifestyle. I believe that my USP is how kind and easygoing I am. While I do fight for what I believe, I'm willing to help others and I always make sure to make others feel heard. I also make sure to value others opinions so nobody is disappointed. While being said, I still make sure to remain stable and stand my ground. This has always given me an advantage in school, because its shown the respect I have for those around me, while also having a solid plan. I make sure to include other's opinions on things like projects, because sometimes they have more helpful ideas that may even help get a better grade. I manage to stay organized, and use teamwork. My peers tend to like this about me, and often I'm chosen by staff in my school to lead an example. I hope to remain this way to keep a stable and positive work environment.

One of my favorite brands is juicy couture. Juicy couture is an apparel brand that is mainly known for their bling “juicy” tracksuits. Their apparel brings confidence to women all around the world, and is worn by many famous celebrities including Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian. I myself am a huge fan of juicy couture, collecting purses, jewelry, and own 4 tracksuits of my own. However, since June of 2014, juicy couture shut down all of their stores in the USA due to the decline of sales. My USP for juicy couture is based on balancing casual luxury with a playful lifestyle. I chose this because even though juicy couture is pricey, it's not meant to be on display, it's meant to be worn throughout every season whenever you want, not just on special occasions! Being able to enjoy life in clothing that makes you feel like your most authentic self is the best feeling in the world. I think this would give me a personal advantage in projects because some people don't like to be overly flashy about what they wear or what they have, which is why juicy couture is perfect for everyone.
