O Captain! My Captain!
Walt Whitman
</sup>O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
      But O heart! heart! heart!
            O the bleeding drops of red,
                  Where on the deck my Captain lies,
                        Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! My Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills;
For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
      Here captain! dear father!
            This arm beneath your head;
                  It is some dream that on the deck,
                        You've fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won;
      Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!
            But I, with mournful tread,
                  Walk the deck my captain lies,
                        Fallen cold and dead.
__________
After reading this I recognize that this poem is an elegy. So I search for the background of this poem, and I found that Whitman wrote this poem to honor Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States of America.

Accordingly, I think "the ship" symbolizes the United States, and "captain" symbolizes Abraham Lincoln.
Like, he can lead the USA to victory, but in the end, he was killed by John Wilkes Booth, a supporter of slavery. Booth believed that Lincoln was determined to overthrow the Constitution and destroy his beloved South.

Missing
Anne Scott

I’ve hunted near, I’ve hunted far
I even looked inside my car.
I’ve lost my glasses, I’m in need,
To have them now so I can read.
I loudly swear and I curse
Did I leave them in my purse?
Are they behind the sofa, under the bed?
Oh there they are—on my head!
__________
This poem is relate to me a lot. Once I can't find my sunglass. I try and I try to find it. I think my mom took my sunglass into her bag, but when I seek them, there is no sunglass in them. I start to cry, then my mom be like "Why are you crying?" So I am like "I lost my sunglass." Then my mom smiles and says "It's on your head, idiot."

A Warning
Barbara Vance

Take heed on every windy day
To tie a rock upon your shoe,
So that you do not blow away
And whiffle off into the blue.
__________
I like this poem because it's not directly talking about the lesson. It's like telling some story. From reading this, I think it teaches us that although It's you hard time in life, you need to have consciousness, and don't sink into your sad thoughts.
