Checking in with students is extremely beneficial. It shows them that their emotions matter and that they matter.

Acknowledge the students as individuals. Greet them by name. Make connections.

Tradition- standing by door and checking in, making eye contact and quick check in at the door or in the classroom, the value that everyone belongs and is treated like a person- that students can sense that someone values them and cares for them, that feeling lasts

Be the positive mentor they need in their life. You don't know most of what they are going through so sometimes that can be projected on to us. We have the ability to help influence them in a positive way.

Showing students that you value them. Saying good morning, asking them how their day is, telling them you are glad they are back/feeling better when they missed school, etc. goes a long way with kids.

The small things that we do everyday such as check-ins, greeting them, and conversations can compound and make a difference in them. They will respond to you more positively and feel safer and more comfortable in your classroom.

Building relationships is easier when you are authentic — when you treat students as people, and when you let students know you are a person. It also makes correcting behavior more effective because it's two people having a conversation.

They might not remember necessarily everything that you teach them, but they'll remember how you made them feel.

Showing them that we are real people who make mistakes, too. Humility breaks down the barrier and creates authenticity.

The message at the end - "the opportunity to make your class time what you want it to be" is critical and I think with the change in class times and push of various new initiatives, there has been a loss of this opportunity.

Being human with the kids. Telling them things in your life that maybe was a struggle or embarrassing will let them know that you are a human and you mess up, so it is okay for them to mess up too. Then they can work on the skills, academic or social, that they need without feeling judged or embarrassed.

See students as people first. They're allowed to feel angry, sad, embarrassed, etc. We need to be careful not to "punish" their feelings when addressing behavior choices that stem from those feelings.
