-The Limbic system’s purpose is to serve a variety of fundamental, cognitive and emotion functions.
-The confusing thing about the Limbic system is scientists can’t agree on what systems are in the limbic system and which are not.
-Although there is a disagreement about some of the systems, the 4 main structures are the Hypothalamus, Amygdalae, Thalamus and the hippocampus.

-The hippocampi are an example of a function within the Limbic System.
- The hippocampi are located on the inside edge of the temporal lobes and are needed for memory formation.
-This helps convert your short term memories into long term memories.
-When your hippocampus is damaged it will not form any new short term memories, but your long term memories will stay intact.

-The amygdalae is located on top of the front portion of each hippocampus.
-That are important for processing emotion and decision making.
-They communicates closely with the hippocampus and hypothalamus.
-They are the cause of aggressive traits.
-When they are stimulated, it produces feeling of fear/anxiety or anger/violence.
-On the other hand when they are destroyed it can make a person feel mellow and make you impulsive and have a disregard for consequences.

-The brain has two, one located on the left and the other on the right.
-The Thalamus’ purpose is the collect information that our nerves send it when touching, tasting, seeing or hearing something and it tells the body how to react. In fact our senses are a factor of emotions because of how the thalamus reacts to the message from our nerves.
-The smelling sense was not included because it actually bypasses the thalamus and has its own area of the brain.

-with the Limbic system you get your survival traits which tell you when to be hyper vigilant in times of distress or danger; also fighting or fleeing in the slightest provocation.
-Also the Limbic system gives us basic neuroception, which is the ability to distinguish someone or something as a possible threat and this then ties into the fight or flight response. This also is depicts just the opposite, if something or someone is safe and secure which this is made possible by the Limbic system’s capacity to form emotional connections.
