This part of The Glass Castle felt like a window because I don't know why Jeannette's family is always moving and struggling, my family isn't like that so reading this book has showed me how difficult it is living a life where parents make promises they can't keep. I relate to Jeannette when I hope for better things knowing it wont happen. It made me realize it would be tough if I was living her life.

I chose poverty because this motif is prevalent in the book when Jeannette was in the hospital and she was receiving everything she wanted but the dad took her because they didn't have enough money. Also when they were sleeping in the car and when they would celebrate Christmas after it is usually celebrated to pick up a Christmas tree on the side of the road and the parents bought gifts that were clearance after Christmas.

" Just then we took a sharp turn over some railroad tracks, the door flew open, and I tumbled out of the car" I chose this quote because it stood out to me when she flew out the door and made it significant, it also stood out to me because her parents continued driving without stopping and she thought they were going to abandon her. Jeannette was the one telling the story of her flying out but this incident shows the challenges she faces making it a key moment in her story.

Rex keeps promising to build a "glass castle" for the family but he doesn't seem to be getting no where, Jeannette the author doesn't seem angry she just tells the story as it happened. This reveals that she doesn't judge her parents although they make mistakes.

2. What feelings or emotions does this book evoke for you? Choose a passage from the

reading that elicits a response from you and explain.

This book evokes sadness because Jeannette's dad's dream is to build a glass castle but I think that he won't actually accomplish it since based on what we've read he lies to his family and it makes me feel sorry for the them.

4. How does repetition of any particular motif reinforce the theme(s)?

A repetition being mentioned is the "glass castle", it shows that Rex talks about big dreams giving his family hope. This makes the theme of dreams vs reality clear, its not sure that he accomplished the dream he promised.

How are class differences presented in the work? Are the characters aware or unaware of the economic and social forces that affect their lives?

The class differences are presented when Jeannette describes her family's struggles with poverty and how it affects them and how they live. I would say the characters are aware because the children are aware of their parents financial problems except the parents don´t see that they are the ones impacting the family with their choices. An example is Jeannette´s father spending money on alcohol instead of essential and things they actually need.

How do economic conditions determine the characters' lives?

Many of the family's economic conditions determine their lives because they can´t afford the basic needs like food and shelter which for this reason it leads them to move a lot and living in unstable conditions. For example in the book, Jeannette speaks about how they look for food in the garbage cans since their parents don´t provide it for them.

What ideological values are explicit or implicit?

I think that the parents prefer independence and freedom over stability and responsibility. The book shows directly that they prioritize their desires over the children's well being even if they know that it will make their children suffer.

¨I was learning that you cant expect people to do what you want just because you want them to.¨ I chose this quote because it stood out to me when I read through it, especially because it seems that she realizes the reality of her life for example she has been looking to her parents for guidance and protection but this made her realize people have limits especially her parents so she becomes more reliant on herself since she knows her parents often fail to provide stability and care for her and her siblings needs.

I chose neglect because this motif is prevalent in various parts of the book for example Jeannette´s parents often fail to take care of her and her siblings, especially her father, when they leave them unsupervised in dangerous situations. This motif shows through the lack of providing food, safety and shelter, making the kids more responsible of themselves at young ages where usually other kids still have their parents to take care of them without the child needing to be more responsible of themselves.

This part of The Glass Castle felt like a window because my parents would never leave me unsupervised and would always be their for me no matter what. They would not leave me alone especially in dangerous situations and never made me take responsibility of myself at a young age until I was old enough for it. This made me realize that Jeannette was forced to grow up and forced to take a responsibility that she shouldn't have taken at her young age, it made me upset to think she went through that.
