From the start of the 20th century up until present day groups such as African American, Workers, Military and Businessman have evolved due to their hard work and what they can offer American society. Each of these roles has gained the rights and opportunity as every other American citizen. Some roles however on paper are equal but in certain situations they are treated like second class citizens. An example of this is African Americans, military, and workers. Due to their skin color or being female they are judged or treated differently because of their race or gender. While others roles like businessmen exceed due to the wealthy environment that they are in, they are the ones in control with the power telling people what to do.

From the start of the 20th century up until present day the treatment of African Americans has evolved for the better. They went from being segregated and treated like dirt to being acknowledged as part of the economy class who are given the same rights and opportunities. Laws were created that gave African Americans the same rights as whites. African Americans have also integrated into society where now people do not see them as something different but as a part of it. Due to the evolution of the treatment of African Americans, they now have access to the American dream. On paper and through laws African American are treated equal, have equal opportunity, and not judged based off their skin color but still to this day their are certain incidents and events where African Americans are judged because of their skin color.

The picture of a less than or equal to sign represents African Americans because in the past when they were freed and were said to be equal but they were treated less than white citizens. They could not go into certain stores, they couldn’t get certain job, and jobs they did get they were paid less all because of their skin color but were still said to be equal. Even today African Americans on paper and by law are said to be equal when in reality they are treated worse or less than white citizens. On Internationalbusinesstimes.com in the article Police Racism in 2016 it states “Black drivers were 31 percent more likely to be pulled over than whites”. This shows how even though they were said to be equal they were still treated differently because of their skin color.

In The Crucible African Americans were not free. They were still slaves and treated horrible. In the novel it states “The door opens, and his Negro slave enters…she is also very frightened because her slave senses has warned her that, as always, trouble in this house eventually lands on her back.(Miller 8).” This shows that due to Tituba’s skin color she is punished and blamed for everything bad that happens. This relates to the claim because it shows how African Americans are treated horrible because of their skin color, which is what happened to Tituba. She is a slave to a white family and blamed for everything that happens solely due to her being black. This is important to realize because it shows how America doesn’t view African Americans as people but as property.

As time went on African Americans began to gain more rights due to the 13th Amendment. The 13th Amendment states "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." This relates to the claim because it shows how the treatment of African Americans was beginning to get better. They now were free and no longer slaves. Although they were free they were still not equal and struggled from unfair treatment and segregation. This is shown in 1918 in the recruiting posters. African Americans were convinced to join the military thinking they were fighting alongside white men for their country when in reality they were segregated. In the recruiting poster it shows an African American man standing away from the whites. This shows how even in the military where you think they would fight as one they were segregated. This connects to the claim because it shows how the treatment of African Americans is getting better and how African Americans were working for their equality. They were treated very poorly but still were fighting for that country and those men who treated them poorly.

Martin Luther King jr was an African American leader who inspired many African Americans and helped them gain more equality and rights. It was a very difficult process and while fighting for equality Dr. King was wrongfully arrested many times. One of those times was in Birmingham and while in jail he wrote the public a letter. In the letter he said “ I am in Birmingham because injustice is here.” This supports my claim by it shows how even years after the 13th Amendment African Americans still had unjust treatment. Dr. King did not do anything wrong but he ended up in jail because he is black and was fighting for equality. This is important to realize because it shows how African Americans worked hard and suffered to gain their equality and how even after years of being free they were still treated like second class citizens. Another example of unjust treatment is the beating of Rodney King that happened in 1992. He was running from the police and eventually he stopped and when the police got to him they uncontrollably beat him. This was caught on video and became a very popular topic on whether or not the police officers would get in trouble. The majority of the people thought that it was very obviously that the beating was unnecessary and the officers would get in trouble but as stated on NBC News “The four officers were cleared of the beating of Rodney King.” This supports my claim because it shows how African Americans were still treated unfairly because of their skin color. Although Rodney King was speeding from the police it was still unfair that he was beaten because he was black and the officers got away with it because they were white and he was black. It is also important to recognize the riots because it shows how African Americans had to work and suffer for their rights. They revolted and some people lost their lives but it was all for the greater good of African Americans getting a step closer to gaining equality.

In 2016 obama gave a speech at the museum of African American history and culture. In his speech he states “Yes, this museum tells the story of people who felt the indignity, the small and large humiliations of the whites”
This shows how now today people and even the president acknowledge the fact that throughout history African Americans have been treated unfairly and accused and punished for things they have not done. This connects to my claim because it shows how African Americans have been given everything white people had but they still were not considered equal even to this day. An example of this is a study done by John Walsh who shows how today African Americans are much more likely to be pulled over than white people. In the article Police Racism in 2016 it states “Black drivers were 31 percent more likely to be pulled over than whites”. This proves my claim because it shows how the treatment of African Americans has gotten a lot better but still to this day they are treated differently because of their skin color. African Americans have all the same rights and opportunities as whites but they are still judged and treated a little bit differently because of their race.

These sources prove my claim because they show how over time the treatment of African Americans has gotten much better. It did take a very long time and they still are not completely equal but it is very close. The sources also show how African Americans gained their rights and basically equality through hard work. They had to go to jail for legally protesting and then completely revolt in the Rodney KIng riots in order to gain their rights and equality.

With changes of technology, there were more opportunities to newer levels of liberty as well for pursuit of happiness, because of this the ability to achieve American dream had been redefined. In other words, with these changes of technology society was given the chance to explore key aspects that would help them reach the American Dream. Also the work that businessmen had to offer was more adjustable by providing more jobs available for workers which this eventually benefited the American Government due to having to change their identity as a successful government.

Language arts source (The Greats Gatsby)

Gatsby’s ideal of what the American Dream meant to him was to have the motivation and determination in order to succeed. The actions he took in order to prosper was ending his college years and starts to work at bootlegging businesses in order to gain money fast. During this time selling liquor illegally to others made workers gain lots of money making him a businessmen The actions that he took changed him because now that he is a wealthy, others admire him and have respect towards him. In the novel Gatsby states “ I tried very hard to die, but I seemed to bear an enchanted life”, what this quote says is how gatsby was at the edge on giving up but at the end all his work paid off and now became wealthy and has social status. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses Gatsby as a person who achieved the American dream Fitzgerald conveys that the american dream can be pursued differently and not only through education. This relates to the overall claim and my subclaim because it shows that the wealthy take in their social values because it is important to them on how society views them and others. This shows how this affects the immigrants as well for workers because they have relied on their work that business put in for them but for themselves as well.

History source: “The Americans Textbook”

The businessman George Stephenson created the railroad, because of his success of the railroad it did not only change the business world but the lives of american society. “ it allowed workers to live miles from their jobs” what's this quote us states is that with the railroad that was created this gave the American society as well for the worlet's. A better way towards transportation in order to go to a destined locations. This also gave them pursuit of happiness to American society because “the automobile liberated the isolated rural family, who could now travel to the city of shopping and entertainment.” This quote proves how the renovation of the transportation gave American society the enjoyment to achieve pursuit of happiness which is what transportation gave them because they were given the opportunity to go anywhere and achieve certain plans with the right transportation. The automobile became a status symbol for both families and others thought out the world.

Additional source “The electricity metaphor for the web's future”

Jeff bezos is an american technician and retail entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist he is known as the founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Amazon.com, which is the world's largest online shopping retailer is a. He gave a ted talk ted and throughout this video Jeff Bezos explains that because technology has risen up so much and has made a impact to the american lives, he compares this change to the gold rush. He had given historical information of how the gold rush worked and how it made an impact within the united states “For one thing, both were very real. In 1849, in that Gold Rush, they took over $700 million worth of gold out of California. It was very real.” According to Jeff he is compares that the feeling that american society when they were informed about the gold rush to the innovation of technology. He states how when americans found out about the gold rush many americans were excited to succeed because of the gold that they may have found. He compares that to when american society were informed about the internet and the wonders that it can do but especially it helped them get a new view of what it was like to achieve the american dream. This connects to my subclaim because along with him and other buisness man he was able to demonstrate american by giving them the opportunity throughout technolgy by letting them control when and where on a device but most importantly he wanted others to come together as a community instead of some kind of democracy.

Additional source: Bain and Company

Throughout this website brain and company was first established in march 1 2012, this company serves to help make other business improve their performance, operating primarily through the analysis of existing organizational problems and the development of plans for improvement. This shows the advancement of how businessmen keep together and stills succeed with their business. This is highly significant because this does not only benefit the workers but also the businessman because having the right decisions that will bring workers to work for them. This connect to my claim because it proves that with businessmen they are the reason why workers can achieve the american dream.

This is showing that they want more people to fight in the war and be in the military so the U.S can have a stronger military,

War Bonds

In this propaganda poster it's shows a lady holding her child scared looking up at a nazi plane saying buy war bonds and stamps. This reflects my claim and picture because it shows that the U.S wanted money to advance military technology and weapons to make the military stronger

The first gulf war

In this document they talk about how the gulf war was started due to other countries doing things that could harm the U.S or its allies. For example it states “the gulf war was started due to saddam hussein invading his oil rich neighbors”. This connects to my claim and picture by showing how the U.S is fighting against people who are doing wrong to other countries and possibly our own so the military fights back to keep Americans safe.

Recent source 2

In this document the military talks about how they are upgrading their defense systems, weapons, and vehicles. For example they said “The Army is currently undertaking several modernization programs to replace or improve its ground combat vehicles and current rotorcraft fleet”. This reflects my claim and picture by showing that the military is doing its best to upgrade its technology and advance in its power in order to protect the United States and its people from terrorist and other outside people who would have intentions to do harm to the United States or the people within it.

African than Americans met the American dream because of the change of treatment, they were no longer discriminated and seen less other individuals. Over time were finally treated equal and received the same treatment and rights as others. Both businessmen and works achieved the American dream with the help of each other. Businessmen over time opened greater business and created highly innovative creations which not only benefited workers but society as well. Workers have reached the American dream but only to a certain extent this is because the demographics of the type of people that have entered in the workforce changed they way Americans viewed they were reflected among their payment Military reached the finish line (American dream) due to the changes of weaponry and changes of military. The ironic symbolism behind this is that the statue is supposed to be a representing symbol of welcoming any individual within the United States although in this picture the statue is lifting up a stop sign. This targets all immigrants showing how they were able to enter the United States but with very limited sources they had limited access to achieve the American dream. This reflects back to the main claim and subclaim because throughout the 19the century to the 20th century the identity that immigrants have haunt them and prevents them from achieving the American dream constant Barriers are put on because of the race, skin color and religion/beliefs.

All throughout history immigrants have been seen as the bottom of society and have the most limited access to the american dream, life , liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Immigrants have always had a tough time getting liberty and citizenship due to all the restrictions held over them. Because of these reasons they have had to accept and limited version of the American dream just so that they can feel that they have access to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In the present efforts have been made so that immigrants have an equal chance to achieve the American dream but it is still difficult.

In the early 2000s immigrants began to gain props for entering into America and contributing to America by finding low paid jobs that american citizens did not want. In 2003, source 4 states, “immigrants take over small wage jobs that Americans won't” this quote shows how by immigrants taking these small wage they are helping America and getting close to achieving there shadowed American dream. This connect to my claim because it shows how they were accepting a worse American dream and they were still very restricted on what they were allowed to do in the country.

Throughout this source it targets immigrants as criminals and blames them for ruining american society. This is highly significant to relate to the immigrant subclaim because in this article it states how immigrants were treated differently because of their race, american society viewed them more of invaders instead of as a community. “Blamed for lack of jobs, decreased property values, and crimes. Immigrants have been subject to deculturalization” what the author acknowledges is that immigrants only have life, liberty and pursuit of happiness to a certain extent as states previously within the subclaim. Their opportunity of achieving the american dream is low due to the constant barriers that are put up to prevent them from succeeding such as putting up immigration states, receiving constant discrimination and american society using corrupt government in order to control and get rid of immigrants. This connects to my claim because Immigrants were always took to blame for problem in the us and were punished for it.

This article is based off Angel Island the author claims the struggles and obstacles that both chinese immigrants and asian immigrants had to deal with. This relates to the immigrant subclaim because once again it shows that immigrants were denied and purposely put barriers in order for them not to achieve the american dream. The author claims “angel island was often referred to as the ellis island of the west” Basically what the author is saying how angel island wa a immigration station which stopped immigrants from entering the U.S. The author acknowledges that during a certain period of time the american government wanted to control and regulate immigration. The author states “Immigration officials opened an immigration facility” What the author is saying is how the United States during this time didn't want to accept any outsiders or foreign individuals in the country. The extent that they had in wanting to achieve the american dream had faded to the impossible putting up to them. “Many detainees felt anger and hostility-some committed suicide- with the injustices inflicted upon them by the United States.” The author claims that the dream that immigrants once looked upon on were no longer motivated to achieve. This connects to my claim because in 1965 immigration into the country was very strict and this is because they wanted no risk of criminals which shows that immigrants were very untrusted and all were seen as criminals.

Before the 1960s, the US was very strict against Asian immigrants. The Immigration Act of 1965 "opened the door for many non-European immigrants to settle... based on nationality" (Littell 681). This shows how overtime, immigrants slowly gained more rights and entry to the US. Now that the requirement was lowered, more people were allowed to come over to have access to the American Dream, although theirs was limited because they usually lived in poverty and were disliked by race. This connects to my claim because it proves that America put restrictions on immigrants which was limiting the amount of people who could access their pursuit of happiness.

Henry C. Lodge wrote in his article "The Census and Immigration" that " the story of immigrants is associated with the history of racism". They were also blamed "for lack of jobs" which limited their access to the American Dream because people automatically assume things based on their race, which limited their pursuit of happiness. This then connects to my claim that immigrants changed America because they picked up extra jobs and contributed to the American economy. This then in turn contributed to their life, liberty and pursuit of happiness because they were able to get jobs and make money which improved their access to their American Dream.

Donald Trump as the president vowed to keep immigrants that don't have documentation out of the country no matter what. In his speech by CNN he states, “there will be no amnesty,” this shows how he gives no hope to immigrants coming to America and crushing their dream. This connects to my claim because it shows that even to this day immigrant are seen as criminals and aren't trusted and the American dream that was once promised is now over.

When Obama did his second inaugural speech, he used "his inaugural address to cast modern-day priorities- fighting climate change, welcoming immigrants and ensuring gay rights... to live up to the Founders' ideals", and stated "'It does require us to act in our time'" (Fahrenthold and Wilgoren). This shows how Obama cared about present day issues, including the struggle that immigrants went through to enter our country and get accustomed to it. He wanted to help them within the government and as a president, focused on the present day issue of our restricting quotas against immigrants. It also shows how time has changed because he wanted to "broaden equality in the country" meaning that he wanted the immigrants to feel welcome and equal to natives (Fahrenthold and Wilgoren). This caused other people to accept having immigrants with help, and having them intermixed into society to live in the country as a whole, and not separated. This changed America and caused them to live in our time because America is in a time where many refugees and immigrants are coming over to seek better living situations, which the president cared about.

Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle", about Lithuanian immigrants coming to America and incorporates their struggles. Sinclair wrote, "So America was a place of which lovers and young people dreamed. If one could only manage to get the price of passage, he could count his troubles at an end" (The Jungle, 27). He writes about how immigrants were forced to only "dream" about America and realized that the American Dream was not achievable. Immigrants were forced to accept a watered down version of the American Dream in order to think that they had life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, because unreality it was not achievable. Sinclair wrote about how once the immigrants arrived, they were immediately robbed of their money by those taking advantage of them. This shattered their American Dream because they thought they would come to America to gain wealth, but in reality they are the most poor they've ever been. That is how this connects to the image both stating that the American Dream was only accessible in your dreams.
