TEXT: What is Culture? | Definition of Culture

This is the first text of the unit and its mainly reflection is to relate different types of cultures around the world and the structural components these social groups have in common (language, religion, social habits, music and arts). So, it presents differences between some regional cultures, such as western, eastern, latin-american, middle eastern, and african culture. About this point, I really appreciated this relativization, because nowadays at a globalized world we tend to believe that differences don’t exist anymore and we are all part of the same thing. But the fact is: cultures have its (THEIR) own features and singularities that no other in the world have the same.

At the end, a passage calls attention: “While change is inevitable, the past should also be respected and preserved”. This observation is very relevant to consider because I believe that previously (PREVIOUS) experiences and struggles for equity, respect, and justice are the legacy we have as inspiration for today’s challenges.

VIDEO "What is Culture"

This video shows interesting points related to the levels of culture, the importance of not judge (JUDGING) based on stereotypes, and it also argues that culture is "norms and values we learned in childhood". This specific point called my attention because is exactly what we can see nowadays in our society. Fortunately, topics such as chauvinism and homophobia are increasingly discussed at schools, universities and homes because these are critical problems created by people and reproduced by them. So, if these are social constructions that unfurtunely became part of our culture, it is possible to rethink and deconstruct it. This reminds me one Nelson Mandela's quote, that says:

TEXT: The Meaning of "Culture"

I found this text very (Very what?) because besides the variety of meanings a single term can bring, its use is also influenced by the historical and social context we are living. For example, in 2014 the most searched word at dictionaries was “culture”. Analyzing brazilian society at this time, we can identify at World Cup a great reason for people to look for this concept and understand its meanings.

I found it very interesting so I searched for the word of the last year. According to Merriam Webster’s data, the word JUSTICE was the most accessed at its website in 2018.
Considering Brazil, we can identify some explications for that: the many reports of corruption cases we had (and still have), the prision of ex-president Lula, the relates of sexual abuses by medium João de Deus and the unacceptable murder of Marielle (presente!)
