I believe that Jordan Peele’s second film “US” is a film that is trying to warm us about the dangers of Capitalism and Income inequality. The film shows us the devastating effects of this inequality and also shows that the people responsible for it are both the large institutions and the individuals living within the system.
One of the most obvious examples of the film’s symbolism is the tethered. They are forced to live underground in a fake world where they eat nothing but raw and uncooked rabbit. This is clearly a metaphor for impoverished American’s living under Capitalism. So many Americans are living paycheck to paycheck so they are metaphorically trapped Similarly to the tethered. Peele also purposely draws attention to this with lines like “We are Americans” from the character. Red. There are more sublet messages about wealth inequality in the movie such as the contrast of the songs “Good Vibrations” by The Beach Boys and the Song “Fuck the Police” by the NWA. Both are songs about lives in California but Good Vibrations is a song about the fun of living in the well off areas near the beach. Areas that were populated by affluent white people. The song that plays immediately after it “Fuck the Police” is a song about the oppressed and poor communities of color that existed within miles away from the affluent .
The film also shows us that this unfair system is maintained by the state. When the character Red is monologuing she mentioned that the government created the tether in order to control the citizens but failed and sealed them off. This is perhaps a reference to instances such as Redlining where black neighborhoods where very deliberately kept in poverty by the American government. The movie also shows us that those in possession of privilege and power are ignoring those who are struggling. Adelaide Wilson the protagonist had been aware of the struggles of the Tethered for decades but did nothing to actually help fix the problem. As Jordan Peele put it “ This movie is about “maybe the monster is you.” It's about us, looking at ourselves as individuals and as a group.”
