One of the current challenges that I face as a positive behavior support practitioner is a lack of collaboration with local schools and the implementation of positive behavior support practices. Most schools already utilise tier 1 supports through their school rules and school expectations but at times these expectations fail to consider neurodiversity, person-centered care and each individual child needs.

The benefit of multi tiered systems of support is the allowance to consider the individual child's needs based on their behavior rather than punishing them based on outdated expectations. A child with autism may fail to understand non specific guidance and expectations, where the first step of implementing PBS is breaking these expectations into achievable and understandable goals that the child can work towards as well as modeling the positive behaviors, being consistent and acknowledging the success of these goals through reinforcement that is meaningful to the child.

The use of these systems removes the group mentality of the school environment and allows the child to flourish based on their own needs rather than the expectations of the adults. Furthermore by using evaluation tools and data collection, accurate results can be obtained so that any challenging behavior does not overshadow the success.
