Formative assessment is a purposeful process that supplies teachers and students feedback on students' literacy. Formative assessments are used to inform instruction. It is purposeful, collaborative, dynamic, descriptive in feedback, and supporting to continuous improvement. Formative assessment provides teachers with information about the effectiveness of their methods to inform their continuous instruction. I got this information from the article, "Position Statement on Formative Assessment from International Literacy Association" and chapter 8 in Teaching Gifted Kids.

What are three formative assessment choices you would utilize in our classroom? Why would you use each?

Write it down: Teachers have students write down an explanation of what they understand. Then, read these explanations to help inform instruction. I will use this in my classroom because it is an easy way to assess if students are understanding the content. It is quick for students to write down, and the teacher can get a sense of how the whole class is doing.

Mini-whiteboards: Each student, or groups of students, has a mini whiteboard. As they work through problems, they can share them with the teacher or as a class. I will use mini-whiteboards because it is an engaging activity for students. It is easy for the teacher to assess the understanding of students by seeing what the students write or draw on the white boards.

Thumbs up, middle, or down: The teacher asks the class if they understand a concept. If they think they get it, they give a thumbs up. If they are not sure, they give thumbs to the middle. If they do not get it, they put their thumbs down. I will use this method to assess my students quickly because I can gauge where the entire class is at by looking around the room at their thumb placement. This will help the teacher understand if they need to spend more time on a topic or if they can move on.

I learned these formative assessments from the resource https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1nzhdnyMQmio5lNT75ITB45rHyLISHEEHZlHTWJRqLmQ/pub?slide=id.p .

How is this similar or different from what you have learned in other classes?

This information is similar to what I have learned in other classes. I have learned that formative assessments are usually quick assessments of the students' understanding to assist in informing instruction. It provides descriptive feedback of what the students have mastered and do not have mastered. A new idea about formative assessments that is new to me from the readings is that formative assessment is a three-tiered model. I have never heard about this model in my other classes. I also learned that formative assessments for gifted learners should emphasize learning instead of grading. Overall, I have learned from the readings and other classes that formative assessments are extremely beneficial for teachers and students to receive feedback on students' understanding. It also gives teachers insight when planning for instruction. I got this information from the article, "Position Statement on Formative Assessment from International Literacy Association" and chapter 8 in Teaching Gifted Kids.
