Why did you pick this book?
As I enter my 13th year as an educator, I find myself at a new school, in a new role, in a new school district. While there have been moments where I have felt extremely overwhelmed, I have also had the opportunity to dig deep within myself and reflect upon why I chose to be a teacher and to trust my natural instincts. In a way I feel like I have come full circle in my career and I am anxious to ground myself and refocus. Also, I have been known to wear my heart on my sleeve, so choosing a book with the title, Heart! seemed like a great fit.

What are you hoping to gain by reading it?
I am a naturally reflective person and am always seeking to better myself both personally and professionally. I appreciate how the book has space to write and reflect imbedded into each chapter to help capture where I am at at this point in my educational journey. I have a strong understanding of who I am as a person, so I am also hoping to learn something new about myself and to to push myself as a thinker. I am at a point in my career where I am ready and willing to be challenged and pushed to be the best that I can, while staying true to my core beliefs and values.

How does it connect to how you want to grow as a professional?
For students to be successful, it is crucial for everyone in a building to have students at the center of all decisions. In the book, Heart!, the author says, "Regardless of your position or job title, you are leading students and influencing each other for good or for bad, one way or the other." When we work collaboratively with one another and allow ourselves to be vulnerable in our work, our students develop a sense of trust and a willingness to take risks themselves and grow as learners.
