Veronica Mars is a show I was introduced to when I was very young, but have been re-watching it since it came out on Hulu this summer. The main character has a perfect mix of whit and strength to be adored by everyone. The plots for the different season have many layers of depth, each one proving important by the end. Although the original seasons came out in the early 2000s, the themes are still relevant and age well with time. The editing and colors in the movie are true to the 2000s, but are used with precision.

Podcasts, Music, Reality TV, Art and News [August 22nd, 2019]

Podcasts - One of my favorite podcasts is Thick & Thin with Katy Bellotte. This is a podcast that talks about common issues that many young women face. She is analytical about her own decisions and brutally honest about how our mindset affect our actions and how we perceive life. I enjoy hearing about her experiences and how she thinks about her decisions and how I can relate her lessons to my own life.

Music - One of my favorite bands, The Neighborhood, released new music this last week and it's different from their other singles. This one has a slower, melodic rhythm and talks about growing up fast and how that can affect your mindset. I think their slower rhythm with this song is meant to give a sense of calmness to the listener because the topic they are discussing can cause many anxiety.

Reality TV - Bachelor and Bachelor adjacent shows are a guilty pleasure of mine. This week, there was an issue of toxic masculinity among the men and the issue of women being taught that that is something they should be attracted to. I think being too hot headed and fighting at the drop of a penny is immature overall and not something that should be praised. This week there was also the first good representation of the LGBTQ+ community and trying to adjust the show to allow those relationships. I think that this was a huge step in the show's history because in the past they have been very traditional with relationships.

Art - I am in AP photography so I wanted to find an inspiration for a project on cinematic photography. In the process I found Gregory Crewdson and his work is something I aspire to emulate in my own way. I think that his work is disturbing but also dreamlike which I appreciate a lot.

News - There hasn't been that much media coverage about the fire in the Amazon, but here and there there is some coverage. I think that this speaks a lot to the different networks which don't bring this to the forefront as this forest provides 20% of our oxygen. I think that the media sometimes picks and chooses which stories they want to cover and that they are able to fix/support in the best way. Different media outlets which are backed by different political authorities and companies report on different things, despite how important an event may be.

13 Reasons Why, Twitter, News, Tik Tok, Soapbox Sunday [August 30th, 2019]

13 Reasons Why - The weekend of August 23rd, the third season of 13 Reasons Why came out and that was something that I watched for days on end. This show brings many different issues to light and this season also played with the color of the show with past and present with the influence of a large turning point in the show. In this season they also used voice over to tell a lot of the story which can alter the way that the audience felt about the character using the voice over. The creative and film directors were very careful and attentive to how they used these tools to tell the story.

Twitter & News - Around August 28th, hurricane Dorian came to my attention and the original projected path was turning towards Florida. With Irma in 2016 posing a major threat to my city, the threat of another hurricane so soon was enough to make everyone a little wary of the direction and strength of the storm. Over this weekend I was constantly checking Twitter and different news sources to track the storm and it was crazy the amount of different sources and charts that came out and how people reacted to crisis over the internet. This shows not only the difference of reactions within generations but also the difference in reaction to how different sources are presented. If the source tends to relate more to how people feel and how different victims are affected then people tend to react more with emotion.

Tik Tok - I have been very resistant to downloading this app. It was basically the sister app to Musically, which I despised. However, I put it behind me and downloaded it for the possibility that it would be like Vine, which is beloved by many millennial and Gen Z. I soon found myself down a rabbit hole I was unable to escape. I spent around 11 hours on the app in the course of 3 days.

Soapbox Sunday - This week I discovered this song and it was the perfect thing to wake up to. I like listening to "punchy" music in the morning to try and get me motivated to wake up.

Colleges, Bachelor Nation, Wallows, Mac Miller and the App taking over my life [September 7th, 2019]

College - This week as the August SAT scores took their next victims I spent a few hours looking into my top college choices and researching the requirements as well as my chance of getting in. Of course the websites are always promoting the very best of the school, making seem somewhat elite, even if they aren't necessarily a top college in the U.S. . Convincing people that they'd be getting that kind of education is what they're going for.
Bachelor Nation - As more and more couples on the beach are being established, the editing has become more prominent on what moments the producers focus on more. The editing with the people not in a couple is usually more light hearted, not necessarily the cliche love and passion they play with the couples. There's also a lot more emphasis on the bigger drama between the characters that aren't in a couple versus the little drama between the established couples because that's usually what's more interesting to the demographic they are trying to serve.
Wallows - This week Wallows released a few new songs that help transition from the upbeat liveliness of summer into the more relaxed and calm fall vibe. They're both about finding new love and that short of leap of trust and the excitement that comes with it.
Mac Miller - It's been a year since Mac Miller died and revisiting old videos of him and his music always are a reminder of how short life can be and how much he affected people's lives. There's a whole community of people that miss and love him which is nice to be surrounded in during a time like this.
Tik Tok - I mentioned in my previous post about how I had spent quite a bit of time on it after downloading and within a week of having the app I had spent 24 hours on there. Granted I was sick and didn't have school for a couple days so I had some time on my hands, but at most I spent around 6 hours a day on the app. There's something about the different short videos and how you get lost in the time because everything on there is so short you don't feel as if much time has passed by. It's also a lot like Vine when that was popular in 2013-2014, but it seems to fit a little better with current time, which is why it's successful. As well as the fact that it's obnoxiously advertised on almost every social media app.

This podcast discusses diet culture and the host's issues with the diet industry and how it effects them. They also talk about their own journeys with dieting. This week I listened to an episode about "Why Are People Still Putting Kids On A Diet?" I think that this is an important topic of discussion because diet culture is still growing in every way, although it might be different than before with marketing, but it's still all around us. They talk about Weight Watchers starting an app developed for kids and why this is an issue. They also discuss how child obesity should be tackled, but the information about this issue needs to be given to the parents, who should be taught how to deal with this issue in a healthy way instead of forcing something on a kid and giving them the idea from a young age that they should be restricted in what they eat.

This is and always has been an important issue to me due to my family history with weight and medical issues due to obesity and food. I think the way that the hosts deal with this topic is made to start a discussion. They don't completely side with one another in every way, which shows how complicated the idea of dieting and dealing with child obesity can be because of how influenced kids are by their surroundings and the people in their life. I think starting the conversation about the toxic behavior of diet culture and especially diet culture for kids is very important because it's not always talked about in the media.

The New (yet still the same) iPhone 11 [September 20th, 2019]

Every year, people with money burning a hole in their pocket wait for the new iPhone. Year after year since the release of the first iPhone, many have come back every fall for the "best" phone release of the year. I can't help but feel like the media is being fooled into spending their money. A lot of people, including myself, have been brainwashed from the monster that is Apple inc. . Having apple products becomes a form of social status. If you have the new in the best, you are the best and the most wealthy, yet what are the real changes that are being made to the phone every year? This year they added two more cameras as their largest feature and called it a day. Yes, there are some other updates, but other than being able to change your phone to dark mode like everyone's favorite pessimistic app, Twitter, the changes made in the software were so minute that the general public will not notice the difference. The changes that were made don't even involve the issues that the public complains about such as the poor battery life, yet we are socially conditioned to believe that we have to have the new products. What is the real reason behind this dominance by Apple if competitors such as Windows have phones that are just as and even more expensive?

Scooby-Doo Is A Permanent Influence In My Life [September 29th, 2019]

At the beginning of the month, my sister and I put together a list of fall movies to watch. We're not the type to watch a ton of graphic horror films, but we grew up watching Scooby-Doo all the time. I used to know every word to at least five of the movies. This week we decided to revisit the Scooby-Doo live action movie which includes famous actors from the late 90s such as Freddie Prinze Jr. , Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini. Re-watching this movie, which I hadn't seen for at least ten years, I caught many jokes I never would have when I was younger. I think that as kids we like movies because they're fun and tell a story that makes us believe in something bigger than life. As we get older, we can still appreciate some movies that were created for kids because they have humor that is aimed towards a more mature audience. I think the ability to write for both parties is somewhat important when it comes to a good and memorable kids movie. While the ratings for this movie weren't the best, they included a lot of humor that still makes the movie enjoyable and memorable for many audiences and one that I will continue to reference with my friends and sisters.

The Beautiful World of Jeffree Star - By : Shane Dawson [October 5th, 2019]

In the last year and a half, Shane Dawson has influenced change in the YouTube community. He has created many series's about different topics, many focusing on other social media influencers. He films them in a documentary style and they have gained him millions and millions of subscribers. After a seven month hiatus (with the exception of one video re-introducing Eugenia Cooney to the world of YouTube two months prior), he started releasing his series about creating his own makeup line with infamous beauty and business icon, Jeffree Star. They delve deep in to the behind the scenes of creating a makeup line and almost every logistic you could think of. This is influential to the community of YouTube and beauty because Shane is creating videos that are hard for many others to create and has been praised as the "Father of YouTube", many putting a lot of trust and respect into the content that he creates. His status as well as Jeffree's and the fact that they are exposing so much of the behind the scenes work of what really goes into creating a makeup line is something almost no one else has done. This could mark a turning point of how influencers manage their future deals and what makeup brands tell their influencers and customers about the money aspect of their operation.
