Hi Yuanyuan!

After watching your video about your family outing, my heart was filled with warmth and it made me appreciate the rare opportunities I get to spend with all of my family members. To me, the most memorable parts of your video was when your family decided to eat at a Thai restaurant because your grandma loves seafood as well as the time when all of you went to get bubble teas together. And even though you and your brother don’t like to exercise, you still managed to walk along the seawall of the Stanley Park with your parents. Your food preferences or hobbies may be different, but each of you still took each others’ liking into consideration. I think that’s what being a family is about - being able to put aside the differences and enjoy precious family time together! I really enjoyed watching your video and I think you did a great job on this project :)

Hello everyone, my name is Zoe Yuan. I was born and raised in Canada. My parents always told me to remember my Chinese heritage. Therefore, I still incorporate many traditional Chinese values in life here in Vancouver. I also go back to China quite frequently.

I wrote an essay for my final project, and focused on the concept of the generation gap between me and my father. I discussed factors such as our childhood, our upbringing, social environment, and university life. I was very thankful for the opportunity to be able to reflect on our differences/similarities. I like the photos you included in you video, though it would've been even better to see videos of your parents!

The most memorable part of your video was probably the part about your mom being punished in front of the whole class - that must've been really hard for her and I feel sorry that that happened to her.

I really enjoyed reading your essay. I think we have share many things in common. When I was little, I struggled to embrace my cultural identity as a Chinese Canadian too. I would purposely drop the word “Chinese” when people ask about my ethnicity because I was afraid to be different.

I also like how you compared your dad’s childhood to yours to show the difference in lifestyle and belief of different generations of people. I think you did a good job illustrating the difference and explaining your feelings.

I thought your video was really well-done and wholesome. I loved the transitions between your life and your mom's and I think you did an amazing job on those. I also had an English class in the Math building last year and I think we will just never know why they do that. Your mom's Chinglish was super cute. Super thoughtful conclusion, too! Even though you and your mom don't have much in common, you're still family at the end of the day.

I think its great that you were able to get to know your mom better through this project.

A part of your essay that resonated with me a lot was your mom's childhood. A lot of my aunts are teachers like your maternal grandmother, and I have definitely noticed that the expectations placed on my cousins academically are higher than the ones placed on me (neither of my parents are teachers).

I think you did a really good job on your essay, and I feel that it's really meaningful how you juxtaposed your cultural experiences growing up (mostly) in Canada with your mom's growing up in Shanghai.

Hi Davin! I really enjoyed your video and loved learning about the unique culture of Teochew people. Before this video, (I'm sorry) I didn't even know that the Teochew culture existed, but I'm glad that I know now and will definitely look out for it in the future. I found it really interesting when you incorporated your friends asking "do you speak Cantonese or Mandarin at home" because I can relate to getting asked the question, but I always responded with "Mandarin," while I can see how it would be hard for you to explain a less common dialect to people who aren't from China. I found your video really interesting to watch because I never really grew up having my grandparents around and I could see how your grandmas life differs from yours. As someone who also commutes to UBC, I could relate to aspects of your life such as transiting to school and work. Hi Roy, I really like the videography in your video. Though I was born and raised in Vancouver, I have a Chinese palette like you. Have you tried the Chinese food court at the village? It's a bit of a walk but the food there is really good. I also noticed that your mom speaks in a mix of Chinese and English which was a good representation of the way that Western culture has influenced her communication. My family always puts a large emphasis on eating dinner together which I think is an excellent tradition :)

I like your vlog! A lot! I love the creative ways of how you allowed one scene to segue into the next. It is heartwarming to see you connecting with your grandmother. I, too, haven’t talked my grandmother in a while because of heavy school work. Your video reminded me of how important it is to spend time with family. I find you documentary very interesting. I like the way you edited your video to suit the theme. I especially like the part where you shared your story about scarely saying “I love you” but afterwards you showed you and your brother making a birthday cake for your mother. I am quite close to my grandparents as well, so the topic of your essay really resonated with me. There are people in my family who didn't have the opportunity to go to high school or university like your grandparents so I thought your grandparent's insights on that was very meaningful. Your essay reminded me of a saying in my family "People can take away your material possessions, but they can't take away your education".

Your video was really cute! I love how involved your parents were with your video. Your mom's job seems really cool!
If you really like Chinese food, I recommend going to the village food court that's in the basement; it's near Mcdonalds (there's also a Coco there!). (edit: it looks like the person above recommended the same thing HAHA)
I can relate a lot to your day in a life. I always find myself going from class to class (and yes they are always in odd buildings). I enjoyed the scene where you were eating dinner with your family. I agree with you mom in that it is important to reconvene with your family after a day apart.

I really enjoyed your video. It was very heartwarming and wholesome. I agree that Chinese families don't verbally say how much they care and love each other, but instead show it through actions. The breakfast that you make for your mom looks delicious. My family and I also wrap dumplings together. My mom is so fast at doing it and she always says mine looks too ugly or I put too much filling inside. I agree with your mom about how she said that CBCs are more focused on their own personal interests than their grades. I hope the cake you make for your mom next year is super nice!! Hi May! Wow, I think your essay is incredibly well written. I think you did a wonderful job illustrating how challenging your parent's lives were like when they were around our age. I particularly like how you clearly present your values (pursing your passion) and juxtaposing it your parent's point of view (youths should dedicate all their time to studying). Have you ever heard of Maslow's hierarchy of needs? I feel that sometimes, because our parent's or grandparents lived during hard times (ex. food is scarce and it is hard to make a living), they prioritize security which can be attained by studying hard and getting a good job. On the other hand, our physical needs are met, so we want to self-actualize.

Anyways, I think you wrote a wonderful thought-provoking paper.

This is such a touching essay, the hardships that your dad went through speaks volumes of how determined and strong willed your dad is. It is also very interesting to hear about your life growing up and your involvement with so many languages. I personally find understanding languages very difficult so learning them at a young age is an amazing opportunity. I also found myself relating to taking Chinese school on the weekends as a kid. I especially remember going to a bunch of Chinese bakeries, where my parents would let me pick out my favourite treats to take home (pineapple buns and 老婆饼）。I think its really nice how you continue to spend time with your parents and grocery shop there. The dishes you and your mom cook look so delicious, and it's cool to see the ways in which they're similar and different-- like how your mom still prefers to cook Chinese food, while you most like making desserts, even if your parents don't like desserts as much. It's also cool to see how much food can say about culture and family connection. I also thought it was interesting when you said at the beginning that even though your parents don't say "我爱你“ in words, you know that they still do, and how your mom backed that up later by saying that in Chinese culture people show love through actions more than words. On a serious note, parents who have strong Chinese culture in their blood barely says "I love you." My mom and I would say it to each other; however, my dad and I won't. It's really cute seeing that even though they don't tend to say it, they do in their action.

You already know I appreciate your bright and happy atmosphere that radiates from you! You are a big reason why I enjoy the class as much as I do!

After reading your essay, I realized that my parents also often talked to me about “苦”, though I've never really thought deeply about it. I feel that I can really relate to how the different values we have in comparison to our parents (i.e. working hard in school or pursuing our dreams).

Your essay was really well written, and has very nice structure. You even used many words I haven't learned before. I think reading your essay really brought forth how I could improve in my writing literacy.

I really enjoyed the photos you included of your grandparents, it reminded me a lot of the photos I've seen in my own grandparents photo albums. I think we share a lot of similarities, my family also gather to have dinner during my grandparents' birthdays and I also learned piano when I was younger (though it never lead anywhere).

Hey everyone, my name is Chengdi Jiang but my friends call me Danny. I was born in Japan, of Shanghainese descent, but I was raised in Richmond. I really enjoyed the big direct contrast method that you used. It really highlighted how our generation and our grandparents' generations differ. My favourite part was when you used the cultural expectations of placing reproduction first in their generation versus education first in our generation. It really shows how our values have changed over time and also how society's expectations of the youth of the time really changed.

I've never had a chance to really get to know my grandparents so I think it's super cool how close you are with your grandparents. I truly admire how you were able to truly get to know their story. I think your essay was super amazing with really good Chinese!!

I really loved how you not only delved into how your grandparents brought up your parents but also how they were brought up as well. You didn't just go into the values of their generation but rather even into the values that your great-grandparents educated your grandparents with. I love how you pointed out the difference between your values but still stated that you respected and aligned yourself with your grandfather's values as well. It's really rewarding to see how the way our elders treat us very much reflects how they were brought up as well!

I made a film in which I compared my childhood experiences to that of my friend's. Then, I interviewed my mom and my brother to understand why my experiences as a child was different than my friend's. Your essay was very thoughtful; it really made me reflect on my own family's immigration here to Canada. While living in a different culture, my mother and father still kept true to their Chinese identity. As a child, I really wanted to reject my own cultural heritage, but I am today thankful to my parents for instilling values of our Chinese identity that have been carried through for generations.

It was also very insightful to see the differences in education systems back then in Shanghai, and in the present here in Vancouver. Academic success was definitely something that has been enforced by my parents, and I can sincerely connect with you on that front.

I'm very impressed with the care and time you've put into this project. Stop motion is super time consuming and you've done a great job conveying a story with them visually! The figures you used was super cute.

It's also nice that you were able to get your brother's perspective on things along with your mother, most people (myself included) focused on their parents and it's cool to see something different. I immigrated to Canada from China in the middle of my schooling as well and it was quite an experience, adapting to a suddenly foreign environment. I can totally relate to his point about how school is much less formulaic here. Overall it was a very interesting and very entertaining video. Thank you for sharing!
