I was born and raised in Taiwan. When I was sixteen, I moved to Vancouver to study. However, my mom once reminded me of the importance of staying true to one’s roots.

Hi Yuanyuan!

After watching your video about your family outing, my heart was filled with warmth and it made me appreciate the rare opportunities I get to spend with all of my family members. To me, the most memorable parts of your video was when your family decided to eat at a Thai restaurant because your grandma loves seafood as well as the time when all of you went to get bubble teas together. And even though you and your brother don’t like to exercise, you still managed to walk along the seawall of the Stanley Park with your parents. Your food preferences or hobbies may be different, but each of you still took each others’ liking into consideration. I think that’s what being a family is about - being able to put aside the differences and enjoy precious family time together! I really enjoyed watching your video and I think you did a great job on this project :)

Loves,
Lee lili

This year I am a LFS student at UBC. I have lots of hobbies. I like reading, watching movies and making sweets. Sometimes, i'll cook with my mom and grandmother. The food they make is delicious, so I think they're awesome. Because Chinese people rarely say "I love you", they will do an action instead. For example, when I do well on my exams, my mom will make my favourite foods just for me. I think this is an important part of Chinese culture. If you want to talk to me about Chinese culture, please comment below :)

Hi Davin! I really enjoyed your video and loved learning about the unique culture of Teochew people. Before this video, (I'm sorry) I didn't even know that the Teochew culture existed, but I'm glad that I know now and will definitely look out for it in the future. I found it really interesting when you incorporated your friends asking "do you speak Cantonese or Mandarin at home" because I can relate to getting asked the question, but I always responded with "Mandarin," while I can see how it would be hard for you to explain a less common dialect to people who aren't from China. I love that you tied together the idea of Teochew culture and family at the end, which summarized your entire video very nicely. 彭伟加

Hi Roy, I really like the videography in your video. Though I was born and raised in Vancouver, I have a Chinese palette like you. Have you tried the Chinese food court at the village? It's a bit of a walk but the food there is really good. I also noticed that your mom speaks in a mix of Chinese and English which was a good representation of the way that Western culture has influenced her communication. My family always puts a large emphasis on eating dinner together which I think is an excellent tradition :)

- Derek Chen (CHIN 141 001) 梓隽

My parents had also gone through the struggles you outlined in your essay..One particular part of your essay really stuck with me. It was the part when you were talking about how your mom, even though she yells, she means well. I believe a lot of us can relate to this. The way our parents express themselves may be quite aggressive at times, but I'm glad that you know they mean well. It is a great way to see all the generations working together. In addition, I found myself relating to my own life when you were interviewing your mother. The answers she gave were really similar in context whenever I ask my mom a question too. For example when your mom said "easy dishes are easy to make and hard ones are hard to make" it speaks to the cultural differences as I would not say that but I noticed my parents generation would respond similarly

It was very heartwarming and wholesome. I agree that Chinese families don't verbally say how much they care and love each other, but instead show it through actions. The breakfast that you make for your mom looks delicious. My family and I also wrap dumplings together. My mom is so fast at doing it and she always says mine looks too ugly or I put too much filling inside. I agree with your mom about how she said that CBCs are more focused on their own personal interests than their grades. I hope the cake you make for your mom next year is super nice!!

Hi May! Wow, I think your essay is incredibly well written. I think you did a wonderful job illustrating how challenging your parent's lives were like when they were around our age. I particularly like how you clearly present your values (pursing your passion) and juxtaposing it your parent's point of view (youths should dedicate all their time to studying). Have you ever heard of Maslow's hierarchy of needs? I feel that sometimes, because our parent's or grandparents lived during hard times (ex. food is scarce and it is hard to make a living), they prioritize security which can be attained by studying hard and getting a good job. On the other hand, our physical needs are met, so we want to self-actualize.

Anyways, I think you wrote a wonderful thought-provoking paper.
-Shirley 丁雪玲 :)

I am glad that you talked about how your parents grew up in Shanghai during Mao's reign because it was definitely very different than Canada is today. I agree that growing up in China during that time really shaped their way of thinking. It's really interesting that your parents moved to Japan because my dad did as well! Your sentence structure goes above and beyond what we learned in class, and I think the contents of your essay reach a complexity many would struggle to reach even in their mother language. I think the concept of “苦” is actually a really interesting one. Although I have heard it growing up as well, I've never thought of it too deeply, and I absolutely love how your essay explores something so familiar yet unknown!

Yours truly,
Eric Liu (刘滨)

Many don't often stop to consider their daily lives, and I think your video allows people to really reflect on their own lives. Hearing how your mother's lifestyle was so different compared to your own was very enlightening, and her own opinions on modern-day life were quite interesting. Having covered a similar topic in my own final project, I found it really interesting to see our different approaches to the same concept. I related very much to a lot of the stories you told about your parents, as my parents also told me many similar stories growing up. I believe it illustrates many of the things we take for granted, and how fortunate we really are today. It was also really fun watching your clips with your parents in them! One thing that struck me in particular was when your mother talked about her belief that it is important to eat with family. Often when children grow up and become adults, it is easy to get lost in the busy life that comes with adulthood, as well as the new sense of autonomy. I agree with your mom that regardless of your age, it is important to stay close to your family. This is also a sentiment that my own mother shares, so I can really resonate with the message.

The dishes you and your mom cook look so delicious, and it's cool to see the ways in which they're similar and different-- like how your mom still prefers to cook Chinese food, while you most like making desserts, even if your parents don't like desserts as much. It's also cool to see how much food can say about culture and family connection. I also thought it was interesting when you said at the beginning that even though your parents don't say "我爱你“ in words, you know that they still do, and how your mom backed that up later by saying that in Chinese culture people show love through actions more than words. It seems like making food together for your family is one way to show love through actions.
-- Anna (燕宁）from section 001

It was very interesting to hear about what she thought about your cultural differences, such as listening to different music. What I thought was really touching to hear was when your mom said that if she could change anything, she would work even harder. My parents also faced lots of difficulties after immigrating to Canada, but it's so heartwarming to hear how even though they had such a rough time, they would gladly do it again and try even harder to give us a better life.

Hey Roy!
Your video was fantastically crafted! I really enjoyed it because you put in subtitles. It seems like your days are usually long and tiring. I love how close you are with your mom, it's the same for me. Bloods thicker then water, and no matter how old we get, we'll always have that bond with our family. We need to put away technology and spend quality time with one another.

Danny Jiang
江诚迪

Hey Rachel! I really enjoyed watching your video. I loved how it had a kinda vlog style to it where, and thought that your editing was super creative. Since my grandparents live close to me as well, I can relate to the relationship that you have with your grandmother. I think that when comparing your grandmother's life with my grandmother's, they are very similar. Although initially, I would've though that your life and your grandmother's life would've been super different, I was surprised to see that you guys had a lot in common as well. Your video was super well made and your song choices were great for transitions between scenes. Thanks for taking the time to share your life! - Ethan(李中恩)

Hi Johanna

I really loved how you not only delved into how your grandparents brought up your parents but also how they were brought up as well. You didn't just go into the values of their generation but rather even into the values that your great-grandparents educated your grandparents with. I love how you pointed out the difference between your values but still stated that you respected and aligned yourself with your grandfather's values as well. It's really rewarding to see how the way our elders treat us very much reflects how they were brought up as well!

Great essay and wow your Chinese is amazing!! I love hearing about grandparent stories since I've never grown up with my grandparents so it's really fun to read this!

Meg 柔升

Hey Alex,

Looking cute. First thing I noticed was you look a lot like your mom! I really enjoyed your conversation with your mom at the dinner table. I find that as we grow older, we lose those opportunities to connect with our family members. Eating dinner is the best way to maintain those relationships. My parents also gave up a lot coming to Canada. You and me both, our parents came here to give us a better education and we need to cherish that. But we both lazy so...

Danny Jiang
江诚迪

Hi Alex, your video was really enjoyable, your mom seems very hardworking and caring! I loved the conversation you had with her, and she reminded me of my own mother in some of her responses. I think that all parents truly want is for their children to have the best that they can provide, and they are willing to work as hard as they can to make it happen. It was so sweet when your mom said she would redo it to work harder to give you an even better life, how truly selfless of her. Also, good idea to film while you were eating together! That's another important part of our relationships with our parents, spending as much time as we can together. Great job! Eleanor :) 刘馨泽

Hi Jamie!

Your essay was very thoughtful; it really made me reflect on my own family's immigration here to Canada. While living in a different culture, my mother and father still kept true to their Chinese identity. As a child, I really wanted to reject my own cultural heritage, but I am today thankful to my parents for instilling values of our Chinese identity that have been carried through for generations.

It was also very insightful to see the differences in education systems back then in Shanghai, and in the present here in Vancouver. Academic success was definitely something that has been enforced by my parents, and I can sincerely connect with you on that front.

Thank you so much for sharing!

Davin 胡凌凯

Hello Meg,

I'm very impressed with the care and time you've put into this project. Stop motion is super time consuming and you've done a great job conveying a story with them visually! The figures you used was super cute.

It's also nice that you were able to get your brother's perspective on things along with your mother, most people (myself included) focused on their parents and it's cool to see something different. I immigrated to Canada from China in the middle of my schooling as well and it was quite an experience, adapting to a suddenly foreign environment. I can totally relate to his point about how school is much less formulaic here. Overall it was a very interesting and very entertaining video. Thank you for sharing!
Jenny Xu 许天心，CHIN 001
