"And really, you didn't have to belong to a club to feel related to other human beings." (Plath 12). In this quote Millicent reflects on a short interaction she has with a little man. This interaction teaches Millicent the human relationship she can build without being a part of the sorority.

Connecting Quote #1 to Foreshadowing

This quote connects to foreshadowing because it hints how Millicent will later realize that she doesn't need the sorority to make friends, and have human relationships. Millicent had joined the sorority to create better relationships. However, she realizes that the relationships that she creates through the sorority are fake, and artificial. The interaction she has with the little man though shows her that she can make stronger connections on her own. This results in her leaving the sorority, and becoming a better version of herself.

How this quote connects to foreshadowing is because it shows Millicent's main problems with joining the sorority. The problems which we find out later in the story are not being free and not being able to choose her friends. How these things relate with Tracy and the heather birds is, the heather birds are the representation of freedom and Tracy represents her choice in friends.

"And there was an unpleasant anonymity about the label 'gopher', even if that was what they always called the girls being initiated. It was degrading, like being given a number. It was a denial of individuality." (Plath 9) This quote shows how when Millicent starts her beginning of being initiated, she is given a label, and not seen as a person.

This quote can be connected to foreshadowing because it shows the start of the labor and ordering around Millicent will have to endure in order to be apart of the sorority. Millicent has an immediate feeling that what Bev calls her is inhumane. This gut feeling that she experiences is apart of her final decision to not join the sorority.
