Chosen role:

The role that I have chosen for my portfolio is a performer. What I hope to be able to show is improvement of my band work during my time in college and how I am able to use any skills that I Have learnt outside of college as well.

This will also allow me to have a CV for the future that I can add on to if wanted to in order to get into other job opportunities that I may get as a performer or otherwise that will also have grade on it for the graded unit.

A community performer is usually someone that will preform at a live gig for their community, in the case of the brief for graded unit it is an opportunity that a local council to give people the chance to see a live gig who might be unable to see one. These will also occur in community venues and festivals so that easier to attend. In order to be a good performer you have to be able to be a good communicator which may include keeping eye contact with band members so you can signal when a part of a song is about to start or interacting with an audience.

Research for the role:

For this role it is to the chance for people that might not be able to see a live gig the opportunity to see one. For preforming I will have to bear in mind that this may come under communication to the public due to playing songs live and people may be recording as well. This will allow me to also showcase skills such as communicating and working well with others.

I will also be going to the HEllo event once at Sighthill and other networking events to gain contacts and information for being in the music industry as well as Support Your Scene. This will allow me to gain an insight of how the music industry works and how to navigate it.

As I have also stated for this role these performances will take place at local venues in this case it will be for a music gig. Some of these venues and festivals can be the following

Venues/Festivals

•Edinburgh Fringe

•Edinburgh Community Preforming Arts

•Edinburgh International Festival

•North Edinburgh Community Festival

An important aspect of being a community performer can is being able to network with other performers and being able to make yourself known. You can achieve this by going to networking events such as the HEllo event taking place in Sighthill campus (Edinburgh College). By doing this I will be able to be more collaborative and be able to widen my skill base by having new contacts to seek more opportunities that will further improve on my skills as a performer. This will also allow me to gain insight from other people about how to navigate the music industry as a performer and will be a chance to be able to explain and showcase any gigs that I have previously done.

Evidence for role:

With all evidence of my role I will upload them as unlisted videos on YouTube with a link onto the Padlet or get them from my onedrive and upload them as a mp3 if I have to.

As evidence of this role I will provide videos of my Live Performances and audio recordings of my rehearsals (if I am lucky I may also be able to make videos of my rehearsals as well). I will produce this evidence by getting recordings from my phone of any rehearsals and live performances along with some potential videos from an audience prospective as well. I will also provide videos from Edinburgh college as well such as music box sessions and live performances inside the college or at The Mash House in order to show my stage presents and my ability to work in a band.

As for using theory within the context of music I will use examples of my songwriting in order to show how it can be used to help make a song and my song analysis to showcase my understanding of what elements are used to make a song which will be shown as a word document. I will also use my work form Audio from Multimedia class to showcase that I am able to use a daw in order to create a song or any other project that you may do.

I will also use my Audio for multimedia class work in order to showcase how you can use theory within a daw I'm order to create a song or in a jingle. This will also showcase useful skills that you might need if you are doing studio work such as knowing which part to play and how to produce and mix something that has rather been done on your daw or in a recording studio. To show evidence of this I will upload an mp3 of my radio jingle.

The least thing I will put in my evidence for theory is my first study piece's so I can talk about and showcase techniques that can be used for Bass and how it can apply to my practical work such as understanding structures of songs. These will also be presented by recordings through my phone and uploaded to YouTube in order to upload a link on my padlet however for my song analysis I will upload a word document from onedrive to my padlet.

To produce evidence for contracts and copyright I will be able to use my work in my Music Business class to show my understanding of contracts and copyright. This will include live performance and manager contracts as well as any laws that count towards copyright.

As for my cv that should be done and ready to submit by 17th of March and may include some of the evidence from music business. This will show that I understand what happens on the business side of music such as getting manager contracts. It will also showcase the skills that I have and want to develop as a musician and showcase the experience that I have as a performer.

For any external evidence I plan on using recordings of my band outside of college that will help enhance my evidence for the performer role and provide recordings of some of the original songs that my band have made if possible. I will provide the evidence for this via recordings that have been made from when these gigs have happened.

I will also showcase what I have done during my time a recording studio with my band and will show things such as the importance of knowing your part so that you can play your part for when the recording session is going on as well as showing and sharing creative ideas in a band within a recording studio as a performer with original music within a band.

Dates for uploading evidence and breakdown of purpose of evidence:

Live performance:

Music Box session (Live Performance)| May 17th |

Mash house gig (Live Performance)| May 24th

First assessment performance (Live Performance)| 13th March

Song for songwriting (Songwriting) | May 1st

Theory:

Song analysis (songwriting)| April 15th | This will evolve my melody, structure, rhythm and lyrics assessments for my songwriting class and will showcase that I understand the steps for writing a song.

Jazz radio Jingle (audio for multimedia)| May 7th| This will showcase how theory can be used into a daw such as logic and create a jingle or song through that daw such as using chords and harmonic techniques along with skills in being able to produce a jingle or any song within a daw.

Bass scales+arpeggios (first study)| March 12th | This will be a video uploaded to YouTube which will be put on this padlet via a link and showcases the technical exercises that I have done for my first study instrument and how they are effective as warm ups or show to be able to use them in any songs that you learn for a performance senario. For this and my first piece and technical exercises I will also have program notes on these that will go into detail of the technical exercises and information about my first piece.

First piece for first study (first study) | March 14th| This will also be a video uploaded to YouTube and be put into the padlet via a link. This will showcase one of the techniques featured in my technical exercises which are arpeggios for the song I Want You Back by Jackson 5 and this will also give me the opportunity to talk about other bass techniques. This will also showcase these techniques being used within a song and what it can add to a song in terns of dynamics and rhythmic interest. Further information for this piece will also be included in the program notes as well as information about the people behind the creation of the original piece along with the bands history as well.

External:

Band work for studio (External band)| April 18th | This will showcase how my external band records music and the process of making sure we are happy with it as well as artwork discussions that will sometimes occur.

Cadet Voltaire gig (External Band)| March 12th| This was a gig my band played at in November and will showcase skills within a live performance such as communication on stage and crowd interaction.

April gig in Edinburgh Fruit Market (External Band)| April 27th| This is an upcoming gig that will showcase more skills for live performance. This is also my band playing a support act so it will also showcase getting a crowd excited for a headline act.

North Edinburgh Community Festival (External Band)| May 19th

Business and cv:

copyright and contracts (Music Business)| March 28th | These will be taken from the quizzes from the assessments for music business about how copyright and performing and management contracts work.

CV (Music Business)| March 28th

This was the first assessment for the bands during the live performance classes. For this we had to choose three songs to preform in the auditorium in front of our class.

Since I am in two bands for this class I had to preform six songs for this assessment. The six songs I preformed goes as follows

The Kitchen Lighters (band 8):

•Bad Woman by Paloma Faith

•For Your Love by Månskine

•Freedom by Jesus Culture

Red Velvet (band 5):

•Working for the Weekend by Loverboy

•Dreams by Fleetwood Mac

•Taste by Sabrina Carpenter

The video in this section shall be the video for The Kitchen Lighters performance who at the time were called band 8.

Band 8 (The Kitchen Lighters) feedback:

According to feedback that we got of that performance we had a good stage presents and sense of unity. Thanks to our vocalists we were able to have audience interaction making a connection with them which according to the lectures is a sign that a band is strongly gelling together.

Harmonies were also great as the vocalists were able to be engaged with the song but they did say that the harmonies can be developed further. Another major piece of feedback is that we needed to also further develop dynamics mentioning that drums could be more controlled in quieter sections for the rhythm section which would further enhance dynamics. However in the end we were able to deliver a performance that was well rehearsed and well executed.

Band 5 (Red Velvet) feedback:

According to feedback song choices were good and work was put in so that the performance could be as strong as possible. I was able to communicate when songs were ending and is often an overlooked part of stage presents which helped the band be able to gel together during songs. The chemistry of this band was also great and could be sensed by the audience which kept the audience engaged and kept us together during the performance. However this band also got feedback that mentioned to develop dynamics further for volume.

If you don't practice regularly as a band your performance may not sound as good as it can be and people may not want to see you again.

However if you do practice regularly as a band and interact with the audience it gets the audience involved and invested in the performance whilst also making them want to see you again and bring their friends along as well.

This is also apart of the set list for this band so we had practiced this a lot before hand.

If we had not prepared for this live take it would have not only potentially have sounded as good as it dose in the video but it would also detract from people wanting to see Red Velvet at Mash House since this live take ended up being uploaded to a website which would also potentially make the website less appealing.

In order to make sure that we had a successful session we played the song during our rehearsal time and made sure that we went over any sections that needed to be looked at.
Music Business Copyright and Moral Rights

Copyright is a way of proving that a piece of music, art or anything that you have made belongs to you and you have control over how it is used, copied, distributed and adapted acting as a intellectual right to protect properties of creators from people using them without permission or in an unauthorised way.

However multiple people can also have owner ship of the copyright or it can be inherited by someone. One example of this will be if two people have wrote the songs that are inside an album but the logo therefore the copyright would be shared like if a lecture creates a padlet for a class, that padlet would also be property of the College due to the College being the employers of the lecture. Another example is when someone inherits work, as an example of this is when Aya Rand died and Leonard Peikoff inherited the copyright in 1982.

Copyright can also take many forms which is under the laws of copyright. The lyrics to the songs in the CD counts as Literal work which can be protected under copyright law. Any samples that are used from other people have to go to the original as a shared property as long as they know that you ask them to use a sample if their work. The recording of the CD can also be copyrightable due to it being evidence of the songs in the CD being yours (which would be a sound recording). The producer of the CD can also get credit but it would be under phonograph and may also add some elements to the songs in the post production stage. Somethings on the CD can also have a copyright symbol to make it clear that something is protected under copyright.

However some piece are public domain which means anyone can use them such as titles, jokes and government publications.

If you find yourself in a situation that you are in a court of law you can use evidence as long as it is substantial, an original piece of work and in a fixed format through a recording. You can use a recording from a studio or rehearsal that was recorded on your phone to prove that the work is yours. You can also mark things with the copyright symbol and phonograph symbol on sites such as Spotify to prove that the work is yours and the idea was originally yours. You could also give other peoples recordings from gigs and open mics to prove that it is yours.

Moral rights:

Attribution

1. This right gives you the ability to claim a piece of work that you have made as your own by asserting this right as your own

2. You can be credited at a live performance or a movie that states that the a piece of work is yours and you can also have paper documents that you have signed that says that the work is yours, an example of this would be if someone asked you to make music for a movie and you signed a contracted saying you were asked to create it.

3. In the case of Amara Nath Sehae vs the UOI (Union Of India) a sculpture's building he made for the Indian Government had been knocked down which resulted in the name coming off during the process and Amara was able to claim his moral right of Attribution in order to show that he had been asked by the UOI to build the building by showing the court the contract he had signed that stated Amara was to build this building and ended up wining the case.

Derogatory

1. This right is to make sure that people respect the work of the creator and not try to claim it as their own work in a disrespectful manner

2. In order to use this right you need to have the right to the Attribution of the work that has been made however it can be difficult to prove Derogatory in a court.

3. In the case of Confetti Records vs Warner Music a band called Anthill Mont complained that Heartless Crew had added rap lyrics to the song had been put over the original song however their claim of Derogatory was to no avail due to the lyrics being incoherent.

Objection to Fals Attribution

1. This right prevents your name on work that you don't want or don't have credit for.

2. In the case of Blaney's Blarney an unidentified person attempted to impersonate Blaney's Blarney and make comments on Twitter posts and though this person was still unidentified they were giving their order via Twitter which was the first order to be giving on Twitter.

Music Business Contracts

There are four type of contracts.

Performer contract:

A live performance contract is when you are playing at a gig and sign the contract with the following detail.

Date and Duration| This covers how long the gig will be and what date its will happen. Typically it may be 2 weeks for its duration and it will also include break times if you are playing over 2 hours. If you are Orchestra player then there will be times for the gig, rehearsals and dress code for the night of the gig.

Cancellation| This is recommended to cancel two weeks before the concert takes effect as suggest by the musicians union however if you cancel after it has already started you still get paid foe what you did during the contract and sometimes it may also come down to mutual agreement in terms of cancellation of the contract or modifications.

Fees| This will depend on the situation and duration of the gig. This is due to musicians getting paid as per musician as well as set up time and Portage depending on which instrument that you carry and gear and overtime.

For example for two weeks with a band of five for four hours you would get £260 per musician and £51.50 for set up times. They would also get £77.25 for overtime and Portage payment as well depending on what you carry like a guitar and amp would be £38.50.

The organisers would have to make sure that everyone on stage is safe as well as the band itself and of course give a power supply for you to use. It will also be wroth asking for a noise limiter because if you are too loud then an alarm may go off or the power might go out. Recordings of your gig is your copyright so you can make sure that the organisers don't use it for advertisement however ideally you can say for no recordings during the gig.

Modifications of the contract similar to cancellation when both parties have to agree to what modifications have been put in place.

In this situation you would have to find a venue that will be able to have them play there for the year from the connections that you have. Then if tis a band of five mention that £206 is the limit for per musicians if its four hours and if they can't do £206 then negotiate on a price that the organiser would be willing to pay for your gig.

if you also get overtime payment then make sure that they get paid for that as well and Portage which would be £77.25 for overtime and whatever instruments you carry would depend on the instrument itself. For modifications this will also be a good time to talk about what changes you do have before you both agree to the terms because theses fees and modification changes are what are recommended from the musicians union to make sure that you do get paid during a gig since you still have value as a musician.

It will also include the following on the contract itself.

Date and Duration| This covers how long the gig will be and what date its will happen. Typically it may be 2 weeks for its duration and it will also include break times if you are playing over 2 hours. They will also be engaged and interested in your band as well and make sure your band gets the best in terms of the value and money you get off of gigs. For a good manager they will include the following

Terms and Post terms| You can give someone a trial run of a certain time and if they are a good manager you can then sign the contract to get them as your band manager, which would be what they get while working with you. Post term is when they get at least 15 to 10% of the money that your band generate which drops off overtime from something such as a gig but they tend not to hold band money so it would be wroth getting a accountant for your money.

Commission and expenses| They will get paid commission which means they will get up to 15 to 20% rate of which they can talk up about the rate as well to make sure that a band gets the money it gets. However for travel it will come out of the bands pocket due to managers not tending to spend money on travel etc. For places where you can sign contracts this will be called musical territory so you can have a band manager in the UK and another one in America.

The problems with a bad band manager would be if they get a gig for you put the things they spend money on end up losing money for the band and not making money as a result. They may also not have connections (depending on what you're looking for) and be badly organised. They may also not have any gig location that would fit the style of band that you are in.

For a manager you want will have these qualities in mind.

Recording contracts:

A advance for a record company is a loan that is given to you by the company for anything you might need which could be an equipment you need or anything to do with life coasts.

The pros of this is that you can use this to get anything you and you have the option to not take the advance but it is advised that you do in case you need to get any equipment and meet your basic needs. However the cons of this is that no matter if you have hit success or not.

The terms of a record company refer to the length of the contract and the amount of music you make (number of albums, singles etc). There are clauses that will be in the contract such as the following.

*Advances will be part of it where you get a loan and have to pay it back.

*Royalties and Recoupment refers to what you coast like promotion and recordings you pay back to the company for recoupment. Royalties is when you as the artist get 20% of income from the dealer or public (public being the better deal but appears less often).

*Formats refer to what form your music will take when it is released such as CDs or streamed on any streaming platform.

*Territory refers to what region is the contract is legal and where the contract applies to.

One more important thing to do is to get a Lawyer so you are legally represented.

Publish contracts:

The time frames is the commitment of the artist releasing music which would usually be once a year. The total time frame usually would be 5-6 years in any form that the music takes which could be CD, Vines or any streaming platform that your music is on. This also only refers to the artist and not the songwriter.

Royalties rates for record companies are usually 20% to the artist from the dealer or the public. Public is better due to you getting more money from retailing of your songs but 20% from the dealer is more likely to appear. However before you get the money there are also deductions from recoupment which is payment for promotion, recordings and anything you have to pay back to the company.

This is a song that I wrote for my songwriting class for college. I ended up writing this on logic which also made my job on this a little bit easier for getting a recording.

If you do not have a successful song then people may not want to listen to that song and it will detract people from giving any opportunity for gigs which also means missing out on potential profit from those gigs.

To ensure that I had a good result with my song I focused on writing out my lyrics first which I got an idea from a songwriting exercise, then focused on finding chords so that I can build the foundation of my rhythms and melody by using a guitar and midi keyboard. Then while recording I firstly put in my chords and used the marker on logic so that I could know where each part was in the song before adding my hook line and other details for my song like drums (which in this case were programmed drums).

For this assessment I had to create a portfolio as a performer by planning my portfolio and then putting in my evidence and developing my portfolio.

For my planning stage it allowed me to effectively create a rough timeline of when I was going to get the evidence I needed in order to develop my portfolio and to know what I could add straight away and what I had to add later. This plan also gave me time to develop my support documentation since I have been gathering evidence throughout the year.

For my development stage I was able to effectively put in some of my evidence since it was some that already had from early in the year which meant I could focus on getting evidence for all my other classes that I was going to use for my portfolio.

However there was one event that I didn’t expect which was the inclusion of the band Spectrum for my college Mash House gig since they lost their bass player but I was able to step in and learn their set even though I only had two weeks to learn their set. I also created backing tracks for when I was learning the songs so I would be ready for both rehearsal and gig.

One of the skills that I have developed was being able to effectively plan things out so that I knew when and how I was going to get something done in a timely manner. I also developed a lot for being on a stage such as having good stage presence and getting better at my technique for bass thanks to the technical exercises and improving throughout the year.

Some strengths of my planning stage is that it very clearly states the evidence to put in and when to upload them allowing for a timetable of when to upload my evidence. Another strength of this stage is that I was able to gather a lot of research such as key skills of a performer, venues and places where you can network giving me more knowledge of being the best performer that I can.

A weakness of my plan could be that the timeline could maybe be a little more detailed but that could come down to not knowing when I would be able to get the evidence for some of the sections of my portfolio. Another one could be not having enough of a backup plan in case unforeseen events were to happen which could be having some evidence ready to upload in case some of the ones originally stated couldn’t be uploaded.

A strength of my development stage is that there is plenty of evidence and some supporting documentation (some for more than one artefact) to clearly show my skills in that section. Another strength is that it goes into detail of what the artefact is, what could be the down sides and how to make sure that it ends with a good result.

A weakness of the development stage is that perhaps there is not as much supporting documentation as I would like there to be so perhaps more time could of been spent on supporting documents to back up my evidence further.

Despite this I feel as if I have achieved everything that I have set out to do one my plan for this portfolio even if there was a surprise along the way. For future projects I would make sure to look at what I already have and what I could use for my portfolio to speed up the process and not be afraid to take up any opportunities that I am given because that will allow for even more evidence for my portfolio to use not only now but for the future as well.

For this I recorded a radio jingle for my media class. The jingle had to at least under a minute long (the time of an advert) so that then it can be advertised to radios.

If you don’t have an appealing jingle it will make people not listen to whatever you have to advertise and in turn they may not buy or listen to whatever you are trying to advertise.

In order to make sure that I had a good jingle to advertise I wrote out what I was going to say on a wood document and planned out what my jingle was going to be about which was going to be a jazz radio. Then I recorded chords onto logic and made up a bass line to play over those chords with programmed drums.

Restricted Acts and Infringement

The restricted act of reproduction allows you to make copies of music and other copyrighted work. Then the rental and lending act protects all copyrighted works such as sound recordings etc from being stolen by allowing the owner to choose who to rent and lend copies of their work to. Finally the distribution act allows the owner to spread their work to the public with things such as CDs.

Within a test we were giving a scenario of which we had to decide if and what someone is guilty of for breaking these restricted acts and therefore committing copyright infringement. Here is my breakdown of the answers I gave to this question.

1. Scott is guilty of a direct infringement due to reproduction of a product which is a bootleg copy of the single.

2. If Annette has sold something that was second hand then she dose not need permission to distribute it, however due to knowing that is is not realised she may be guilty of indirect acts through distribution.

3. Laurie would not be Guilty of any acts because he needs to have knowledge of the product in order for it to be an indirect Restricted act.

4. Richard is not guilty because he may of not had knowledge of Scott recording without permission.

5. The Charity shop is not guilty of any restricted acts due to being able to sell products without permission and they had no knowledge of the previous actions before Laurie donated the copies.

6. You should not accept the copy of the CD because he is not lending a copy to you and the CD is a reproduction of the recording due to it being a bootleg copy.

This was a gig in December in the auditorium for our second assessment point of our Live performance class. We preformed a total of two songs in front of our class and some other people from other classes as well.

Since I am once again in two bands I had to play twice during this gig. The video in this section will show both of my bands playing which were first and last and the bands set lists (three songs in total since one band only played one song) goes as follows.

New Decline:

•Angels Like You by Miley Cyrus

Bad and Bougie:

•Life Is A Highway by Rascal Flatts

•You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) by •Dead or Alive

We did not get any feedback for this however we did have to write an evaluation for each performance. Within the evaluation for New Decline I mentioned that even though we only did one song we had done that song well and we had spent the time in rehearsal to refine and improve any part of the song that needed work. Me and our drummer at the time Keith were able to keep an consistent rhythm throughout the song and I was in constant communication with the band by looking around to see where they are.

As for Bad and Bougie in our rehearsals we did quick sound checks to make sure we had the balance of volume was right for the auditorium and rehearsal rooms as well as making choices for what to play which Spin Me Round ended up our set for Mash House. For our performance it ran very smoothly and we were all in constant communication with each other along with a cohesive set. We also had crowd participation by clapping along with the quiet chorus for Life Is A Highway but we only had one part that we struggled with which was harmonies since Charlie's voice was straining but besides from that we were able to have a good performance.

If you do not practice as a band then the performance that you do may not sound as good as it can but also people may not want to see you again because of your performance.

In order to prevent that we had practiced a lot for this gig and had a plan of what parts we play and how to interact with the audience making them interact with your performance and make them want to see you again.

In February one of my college bands Bad and Bougie got the opportunity to play at the Cuba fundraiser to support Cuba in recovery from hurricane Melissa of which this fundraiser was also streamed live on YouTube. For this my band had to play three songs which is roughly ten to fifteen minute long set. The songs in the set goes as follows

Set list for event:

•Interstate Love Song- Stone Temple Pilots

•Hanging On the Telephone- Blondie

•You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)- Dead or Alive

If we had not practiced for this there is a chance that this may detract people away from listening to use in the future and draw attention away from the college social media and YouTube where the Music Box Sessions are shown as well as promotion on their social media.

To make sure this didn’t happen we made sure that we focused on and refined the set we were going to play for this event since these songs were also going to be apart of our Mash House set in May so it was important that we worked on these as much as possible as well as the rest of our Mash House set so it could be as good as it can be.

This was one of the technical exercises I was given for HN2 by my first study lecturer Collin which were modes that fit for scales and I had to do two positions for each of these scales at 100 bpm that roughly translates to four bars. In this video you will see me play three of these modes. The modes goes as follows

Modes:

A Dorian (played in the video)

F Mixolydian (played in the video)

G Phrygian (played in the video)

B Locrian (will have a video soon)

If you don’t practice scales and other exercises that you can use for practice not only might you not know what to do for anything improvised but you may also result to injury if you don’t have proper technique which may effect your career as someone who performs in function bands and original bands.

In order to get the best outcome I practice these modes for at least and hour a day and sometimes do them before band rehearsals as warm ups since it dose help to get my fingers moving and makes sure that I am ready to play.

This covered topic such as working status, child protection, motivation for learners and ethics of teaching which we were all taught about before the presentations.

If you do not do research on whatever is featured within your case study then you may not be as knowledgeable about the subject as you could be and the presentation will become uninformative.

In order to make sure that the presentation was as informative as possible my group split our work load evenly and we all got to research about a different aspect of our case study. For example my topic for the case study was the current legislation for teaching of which then I was able to pin point sections of my groups case study that related to this issue such as cyber bullying.

This was a headline gig I had with Silenced Blue at Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh in partnership with the Young Musicians Project where we went to Sunderland the first time we did but this time we stayed in Edinburgh and played the biggest set we had played as a band which was one hour long.

If we had not practiced for this gig we may have not only make people potentially not want to see us again but we also might not of sounded as good as we could have which also adds up to less merch sales.

In order to get the get outcome possible we had rehearsed as much as we could and spent time planning the set and when our singers where going to talk while instruments tune for the next song.

This was a song analysis that I did as part of my songwriting class for Animal Spirits be Vulfpeck. This is when I break down the song in terms of the theory that goes into making a song such as Rhythm, melody, harmony and vocal techniques.

If you don’t analyse a song you might not be able to catch every detail that goes into the song that you trying to listen to in order to make arrangements or notation for that song.

In order to get as much of the details as I possibly could I started by breaking down the songs structure into a verse, chorus structure, also known as A,B,A,B. I can then go into detail about what each of those parts contain and discuss the vocals in the song and what the lyrics mean within the song.

This is a lesson plan that I came up with for three lessons to have with a student. It includes activities for the lessons, the skills that the student has along with their level on their instrument and what the lesson will look like if successful.

If you don’t have a lesson plan in place then your lesson may not be as organised as it can be potentially losing time for progressing your students skills in their chosen instrument. The lesson may also not be as engaging which will result in the student being bored and potentially not wanting another lesson.

In order to make sure the lesson is as successful and engaging as possible I made sure to include the student picking a song they want to learn and exercise that revolves around the song for to practice at the start of lessons and as drills. I also listed everything that I would need such as amps, access to a computer or laptop and tablature for the music which I ended up making myself using Noteflight.

Questions for interview:

•Introducing of person- Name (in this case Daniel), the instrument I play if in a band and being a music student would be the answer for this question.

•If a student what is your study?- The answer would be that the study is music and I play bass (first study), guitar, a little bit of keyboard and a little bit of vocals.

•When did music become a career choice and why?- The answer would be that I started getting into music during high school when I started to pick up bass and started getting more involved in music activities. This was then later on became apparent when I became a music student that played in gigs a lot and went to Download which then convinced me that I wanted to do music as a career because I really enjoyed being able to travel and play for people and creating my own music.

•Toughest thing about being a musician?- The answer would be that the hardest part is the amount of bands I have to be in as a bass player. However despite having to take up so many requests by staying organised and having a place to keep everything in one place helps me get everything ready in a timely fashion.

•Any highlights from any performances- For this question one highlight is my Mash House performance with Spectrum and The Kitchen Lighters during Out The Box since they were able to bring in a lot of energy and in my experience with Edinburgh College they were the best bands I had been put in.

Another highlight is going to Sunderland since I got see the music scene from a different of the UK and I got to perform in England.

For this Ellie offered me the chance to be in a band (Scarlette) with her of which accepted and we got recorded in the Edinburgh College TV studio. This will include one song called Since You’ve Been Gone by Rainbow but the rest of the video will be an interview with Ellie.

If we had not prepared for this recording then the video may have not been as good as it could be and if this is used for promoting it may turn people away from wanting to listen to this band.

In order to get the best outcome we rehearsed at Colour Sound and at the college so that we could prepare as much as possible for the recording. We also changed the key of the song so that it would fit Ellie’s vocal range.

(I should also note that this piece of evidence has nothing to do with Silenced Blue)
