The family consists of two mothers, Lena and Stef, and their children, living in a suburb of San Diego. Their children consist of Brandon, Stef’s biological son, Jesus and Mariana, their adopted children, and Callie and Jude, whom become adopted by them later in the show. The show has followed the lives of the children as they become adolescents, and teens as they enter into adulthood. The episode shows Callie trying to fight for her friend's parents' rights because they are going to be deported since they are living in the United Stated illegally. Brandon’s scenes involve him figuring out what he wants to do with his life, in which he discovers he would like to score films and television shows, after helping Callie make a video for her friend’s parents. It also highlights Mariana deciding between two different boys to date, while she is trying to be a good student in school, but has trouble focusing. The scenes that I analyzed focused on Jude’s situation with his friends, where they encourage him to change his style for his online fans. At first he is resistant, yet lets his friends give him a makeover which leads to him being rejected by others in the hallway at school. He is also in trouble with his mothers because of his inappropriate comments he makes while creating the live show. It is apparent that he is a part of a clique because of the tightly-knit nature of his group of friends. According to the text, a clique is typically composed of “a small group and can be defined by a common activities” (Steinberg, 144). Jude and his friends bond over playing video games together, therefore their clique is defined by their common activity. It is also a smaller group of three adolescents, in which they know a lot about each other. In the episode, Jude’s friends poke fun at the way he dresses and styles his hair because someone watching their online show pointed out that he dresses like a "banker on vacation". Jude ultimately decides to let his friends give him a makeover, where they give him clothes that are in style for his age and cut his hair. Therefore his friends were a great influence on his appearance, making him change to look “cool”. The textbook argues that “because the adolescent’s peer group plays such an important role as a reference group and a source of identity, the nature of the crowd with which an adolescent affiliates is likely to have an important influence on his or her behavior, activities, and self-conceptions” (150). Jude’s behavior, activities, and self-conceptions were influenced by his peers in the episode because he was willing to change his appearance to fit in better with others. They expected a higher level of maturity from their son when he is with his friends. This refers to “parental demandingness” which is defined as “the extent to which the parent expects and demands mature, responsible behavior from the child” (Steinberg, 115). According to the text, some parents can be seen as warm and accepting, while others are unresponsive and rejecting (115). In the episode, his mothers are concerned over the fact that he makes inappropriate comments on his online gaming show that he does with his friends. She states that his language and behavior was unacceptable for his age. His mothers are concerned because they do not know who is watching these shows and they are worried that child predators could be watching. One of his mothers, Stef, is especially concerned because she is a police officer and in the episode she is working on an investigation into a child predator. Therefore, their demands and expectations are high because they want their child to be safe and make responsible decisions. His mother, Stef, comes off as assertive and harsh, yet she does this to protect him. Although, since Jude is an adolescent he may not understand why their concerns are so great, which leads up to a scene in which he expresses that his parents don't understand his leisure activities. 
Another way in which Jude’s mothers' parenting style impacts him is shown through his openness to his mother’s opinion. According to the text, when parents exercise authoritative parenting, “adolescents are more likely to identify with, admire, and form strong attachments to their parents, which leaves them more open to their parent’s influence” (118). After Jude receives a makeover from his friends, his mother notices he has new clothes and a new haircut, and uplifts him to let him know that she thinks he looks good. He asks her for her opinion on his new style and asks “are you sure I don't look too different?” After his mother compliments him and says he looks cool, he gains a new found confidence. New media refers to “digital media typically accessed via computers, smartphones, or other internet-based devices” (Steinberg, 223). Jude and his friends have an online gaming live stream show, where they play video games and talk through how they play. This form of media impacts him because it is a form of spending time with friends, in turn allowing him to develop his identity. The adolescents are also seen texting and Jude uses an emoji to communicate, thus showing how media has also been used to influence the ways in which he communicates with friends. In most scenes with Jude, he is either live streaming, using a laptop, or a smartphone. This demonstrates just how influential that media has on adolescents because it shows just how often they spend time engaged with such devices. Finally, another way that media has impacted Jude was that after he got the makeover, he was now seen as cool because he was wearing name brand clothing. Media also played a big role in influencing his leisure time spent with friends. Throughout much of the episode, Jude looked to others for reinforcement of his new style, which shows just how important it is to positively influence teens. The episode was able to show how an adolescent was able to balance complying by parents' rules and still be “cool” among friends.
