What did I think?

"Every Song Ever: Twenty Ways to Listen in an Age of Musical Plenty," wow, what a title!
This book is a unique one. I thought interaction between the author and reader was super different from most books I've read. He provided examples of songs throughout the chapters that I could actually interact with to understand what he was describing.
Music is something that can be universally appreciated. No matter what cultural background someone comes from, music is usually a part of their life. We all listen to different genres and languages of music, yet Ben Ratliff manages to dive deeply into each genre to appreciate it's beauty individually. This book opened my mind to actively listening and not just casually listening to music and disliking it immediately, and that is something I appreciate. I think a book is truly a quality piece of material if it changes the way you think.

"We think of pieces of music from a distance as blocks of time, but can we hold more than a second or two in our minds? And are we—with all music, to some extent—waiting around for some pinpointed extraordinariness to happen?"

"For me, ways of listening meant not platforms, but kinds of listening experiences that could link up examples of music that were really far apart, maybe from different centuries or continents, or from different traditions, that in a genre way had absolutely nothing to do with each other.
