Discussion points can range from the notices and questions student have, features of the print or parts of the book, vocabulary, illustrations, language, story elements, themes, and more. The book puts books into the following categories: classroom community, fiction elements, fiction comprehension, nonfiction comprehension, foundational and language skills, and writing. Elkonin Boxes are a great strategy to use with students developing those beginning reading/writing skills. Use this for students to determine the sounds or the number of sounds in a word. This provides good practice for segmenting and blending along with building letter/sound knowledge.

Flipgrid

Flipgrid is a tool that allows students to communicate and interact through video recording. Teachers can create a "grid" in which students respond to a prompt or students can access public grids to respond to or watch responses from others around the world. This is a great tool to support learners with speaking and listening while also building communication skills. It's also great for struggling writers or even English Language Learners to communicate what they know Flipgrid has an infinite amount of possibilities for use!

It provides nonfiction magazines with information aligned with specific standards while also including discussion and comprehension questions and reflection activities. With a school's subscription purchase, teachers also get physical copies of several magazines each month.

Classkick is a tool that opens doors and crosses barriers for students! This website allows teachers to create Classkicks that could include texts, questions, places for student responses, and more. Teachers can record texts and questions to be read to students. Students can then write, draw, type, record, or drag and drop to respond! A free account gives teachers the ability to make up to twenty Classkicks and a school subscription allows for unlimited Classkicks. Teachers can also share Classkicks they create with colleagues.

SplashLearn is a website that offers additional practice of literacy skills. Teachers can assign assessments and tasks that are linked to specific reading, writing, and language standards. Students can complete assignments, follow their learning path aligned to their specific needs, and find practice games. Tasks are presented in an engaging, game-like format. Creating an account is free and you can create your own class through Clever in order for students to have easy access and teachers to monitor their progress.
